Canucks Army Game Day 66 – Canucks @ Golden Knights (Shame Edition)

THE INTRO

The Vancouver Canucks are in Vegas today to take on the ever-popular Golden Knights. The atmosphere will be booming and Vegas is riding a bit of a win streak. The Canucks are looking for answers right now and they could really use some EP40 magic. Pushing for the playoffs will still occur but the Canucks should focus on a 60-minute effort and get ready to welcome Jack Hughes to their team in June.

Despite everything that’s happened this season, Vancouver has ended up where we all thought.

LINEUPS

Travis Green didn’t exactly go line blender on his roster but there are some curious choices which Green says “might work”. Adam Gaudette is on a line with Brock Boeser and Antoine Roussel while Elias Pettersson will be graced with Nikolay Goldobin and Tanner Pearson.

Luke Schenn swapped in an out with Derrick Pouliot and Ashton Saunter. Luke Schenn should be the play here.

Jacob Markstrom should be back between the pipes today. Thatcher Demko will get the starts as needed but everyone will need to chill out and realize his NHL game will also take time.

Erik Haula is still out with a lower-body injury. Other than that, Vegas has won their last three games so nothing should change.

Marc-Andre Fleury should start this afternoon but Malcolm Subban could probably handle this current Canucks squad.

YOUR INFORMATIONAL NEEDS FOR TONIGHT’S GAME

  • The power-play has been a constant source of frustration this season for the Canucks and their fans alike. Rightfully so. Vancouver has amassed 207 power-play opportunities this season which is good enough for seventh in the league. The downside is they have scored 30 times which is the eighth-worst in the NHL. Sitting at 15.0%, it really can’t get much worse unless they get Markstrom to create outlet passes to start the rush. Travis Green has messed around with his PP units so hopefully, a spark is created.
  • Vancouver is a sure bet to lose if they’re scored on first. Their 24 losses are just behind Detroit with 25 and Los Angeles with 29 in that category. This isn’t a beat up the Canucks session but they can’t expect to make the playoffs if a quarter of their season is them losing if the other team gets on the board before they do. Can’t happen.
  • Elias Pettersson has three goals in his last 15 games. Let that sink in. Today needs to be the day he ends that streak.
  • Antoine Roussel has goals in three of his last five road games which softens the blow as some of the other “stars” have been left off the score sheet. Roussel has been a breath of fresh air and the aura of Alex Burrows definitely lives on. The Canucks got a steal of a player in Roussel.
  • Ryan Reaves and Will Carrier are 1/2 in the NHL in hits. Expect to see a few shifts and big hits from these two.

MY 94 CENTS

Having finally attended a Golden Knights game earlier this season, I’m amazed Vegas doesn’t draw the most penalties in the league (they’re not even top-10!). The building overall is something to behold, there’s always something going on. You truly feel like an outsider if you aren’t cheering for the Knights. The Canucks can survive today but I’d imagine they’ll need goals from their stars today; they’re due.

THE TWITTER TAKE

  • Kootenaydude

Pettersson seems a little tired these days. It’s a long schedule for a young guy that gets leaned on so heavily. We’ve got some guys fighting for contracts next year. They better bring it!

  • canuckfan

It is all about now getting ready for next season getting to know who the legit prospects are giving them a taste of what it takes to play in the NHL as well as giving them a reward for their hard work and give them hope to keep them motivated on making it to the big time.

  • Giant-Nation

Next boost for fans will be when Quin arrives. I hate the team losing but enjoy climbing the draft position. Looks like 7 place to end the year and maybe a lottery boost, hoping for Byram

  • Fred-65

A question that must surely be asked is how come injuries devastate the Canucks seems like every season. Until the “bug” hit the team was doing OK, not great but OK. There are other teams with heavy travel schedules that don’t seem to suffer as much, what are they doing. Years back Vcr didn’t seem to suffer so many injuries a couple of year back …. or is that my bad memory ?

    • Kootenaydude

Most Fred I think when it comes to Edler and Tanev the team leans so heavily on them. Especially Tanev with all the blocked shots, his style of play, age and the fact that he plays against the toughest players. Edler was playing fine, but had a freak accident.

  • Holly Wood

Since the Gudbranson Pearson trade last week, I have caught two Pittsburgh games vs Buffalo and Montreal. Guddy has played 20 plus minutes in each game and has delivered a solid games both nights. Shot blocking, boxing out his man on the pk, quick outlet passes and some net presence . It’s just a small sample but if this continues we really have to wonder what went wrong in VCR. Most of you never agreed with my take on Gudbranson and I admit he did not play well in a Canuck uniform but he looks like everything I had hoped for in two games in Pittsburgh

  • I am Ted

Yep, playoffs are a pipe dream. I really think Benning will be under the microscope again and I would not be too upset if he was canned this summer. Like his drafting but he’s bumbling around in most other departments.

  • Gino's 3rd Cousin

Geez, I think I’m going to kill my account here. The phoney known as PQW/Matty T etc. is using this handle now and making his trash posts with it. I have always felt this site had the best overall Canucks content, but the comment section is chaos. There are resources out there if you want to learn the basics in fostering a healthy online community. But I know you are all too busy to make the effort. Smell you later. PQW/Matty T get a life. You are a loser and have severe mental issues.

    • PotKettleBlack

Good idea Hypocrite Gino… next time maybe you should keep your trap shut before mocking others and supporting cloning eh…

I support Marty T’s Mom in her tenacious pursuit of PQW/Matty T posts. It’s a breath of fresh air since the banning isn’t working. I have faith that mom will continue to doggedly whip the ignorance out of her imbecile offspring.

Now f—(k) off as promised, you are done here.
