It’s time again for a mid-week favourite: What Would You Do, where we put you in charge of the Vancouver Canucks and ask you to figure out how to solve a problem facing the team in the comments section. This week, we’re going to look at a looming conundrum for Willie Desjardins: once every forward is healthy once again for the Canucks, just who would you sit in the pressbox?
So what would you do in Willie’s shoes? Read past the jump to join the discussion!
Really, for all the problems for a coach to have, this is a pretty good one. The Canucks have a glut of bottom-of-the-roster players that have been playing well of late, and not enough roster spots to get them all into the lineup at once. They have used all of their post-deadline AHL call-ups too, so the current roster is essentially the one that will take the ice in the opening game of round one. That means no one is going to get demoted to Utica for more playing time – all guys in Vancouver right now will finish the season in Vancouver.
It’s looked like Willie Desjardins’ current optimal healthy roster in his mind does not include Ronalds Kenins, as the Latvian Locomotive has been scheduled to sit a game or two out with Brad Richardson and Alex Burrows returning from injuries, but thanks to more minor bumps and bruises, Kenins remains in the lineup and is playing quite well. Playing almost exclusively with Bo Horvat and Jannik Hansen – two guys that were struggling enormously at 5-on-5 earlier in the year – Kenins has posted top-6 quality possession and scoring numbers and helped breathe light into a previously moribund unit. But, in the grand scheme of things, he’s a winger (which is easier to replace than a centre) and is still quite unproven, having played just 19 NHL games.
Fortunately for Kenins, Alex Burrows’ performance last night against the Flyers may have bought him an extended look on the Sedin line at the expense of Zack Kassian. Desjardins has been reluctant to play Kassian at times this season, likely due to the Big Guy’s very real defensive misgivings. Still, Kassian helps push the play in the right direction, seems to be an adept point producer, and has had tremendous success with the Sedins so far this year. He’s good enough to be in the lineup, and has demonstrated as much this year.
Another candidate to come out is the struggling Derek Dorsett. Dorsett has previously been a super-premium NHL 4th liner, pushing play in the right direction given tough assignments very much like Kenins has in his short NHL stint. While Dorsett’s points are still there this year, his five-on-five play has deteriorated unexpectedly fast, to the point where he’s beginning to enter “liability” territory. It’s unfortunate too, because Dorsett brings a tough-and-borderline-psychotic element that I think is important to have in your lineup, and he’s been by all accounts a true team guy and excellent leader off the ice. Perhaps a stint in the pressbox to rejuvenate his surely beaten body will help get game back to where we expected it to be, but can you afford to remove his willing to go above and beyond mentality when he keeps picking up points?
Other candidates to rotate out of the lineup include Chris Higgins (not making a noticeable impact night-in night out, but this could be perception driven since he’s in a shooting% slump while his underlying numbers are still good), Bo Horvat (has been very good of late, but is still just 18 and Desjardins may want to monitor his workload to make sure he’s fresh to go into the playoffs), and maybe Jannik Hansen too.
So, assuming that Zack Kassian is healthy and able to return on Thursday, who would you healthy scratch assuming that Linden Vey and Brandon McMillan are almost assuredly going to be in the press box? Do you take out the unproven Kenins, or the struggling Dorsett? Do you keep Kassian out of the lineup to keep a good thing going, or do you pull out a due-for-regression Chris Higgins? What about for the final few games of the season? Who do you have out of the lineup on a regular basis, if anyone? Do you make a rotation of guys to sub in and out? If so, who? Let us know in the comments below!
