Welcome back to WDYTT, the only hockey column on the internet where the content is random, but the acronyms stay consistent.
Speaking of random, we’re looking for a little more of that today. One of the problems with a weekly call-and-response column is that asking any question inherently limits the answers. That’s become especially apparent in this unique preseason section of the year, in which we’ve asked you to make a handful of predictions that we intend on checking the veracity of several months down the road.
There’s got to be more you have to say than what we’re asking allows you, and with that in mind, we’ve decided to really open things up for this, our last preseason question (which will probably hit a few days after the regular season has begun, but close enough!)
The 2026-27 regular season begins on September 29. It concludes on April 10. The playoffs begin at that point, but we all know that won’t be a factor for the Vancouver Canucks.
So, over the course of the next six-and-a-half months or so, what’s something that you think is definitely going to happen?
Today, we’re asking for any and all predictions you have for the 2026-27 season. Feel free to make them as specific, bold, weird, and, yes, random as you like. It wouldn’t be nearly as much fun if you didn’t.
This week, we’re asking:

What is a random prediction you have about the 2026-27 Vancouver Canucks season?

Let it be known in the comment section.

Where do you predict the Vancouver Canucks will finish in the 2026-27 season, and with how many points?

You predicted below!
Rickster64:
Last place in the NHL with 69 points.
BigBA2:
Next season is hard to predict, but my guess is that we end up just outside of making the playoffs.
So, 88-92 points is my guess.
Jibsys:
Second last with 72 points. Who could be worse? There are a few contenders, Flames are an obvious choice, but I’m sure another dark horse will emerge to win the futility cup.
tyhee:
28th place, 78 points, many complaints from fans wanting a 32nd place finish, many complaints from the fans, often the same ones wanting a 32nd place finish, that the improvement isn’t coming fast enough. Many compliments from fans and media to Canuck management for sticking to the plan and not rushing things, many complaints, often from the same fans and media and fans that young players aren’t immediately put in prime spots in the lineup or in some cases not immediately playing in the NHL.
ParodyGuy:
Slight improvement but still last place with 63 points.
The only teams I can see being potentially worse than us are Calgary, Chicago, and Seattle.
Chris:
Second to last. Ducks implode after a terrible off-season and grab the #1 overall pick.
defenceman factory:
Tough to answer this question as we don’t know if management will actively manage roster to stay at the bottom of the standings.
I believe the culture, work ethic and systems improvements will start to click within a couple months. The Canucks will start to win a few more games than they should want to. If they do not actively manage to stay at the bottom of the standings I predict they finish around 25th and get close to .500 hockey, 78-80 points. They really don’t have the talent to finish higher. There have been no significant talent additions either with UFAs or prospects for this season.
If management manages the roster and trades out some veterans as the team (and trade values) improves they can stay a bottom-three team and come in around 68 points.
nuxlander:
30th, 72 points – win the lottery.
Darryl Braaten:
I think Detroit will be a dumpster fire and finish dead last.
Hockey Bunker:
74 points, 31st, draft second overall.
Harold Drunken:
They will be better than last season if only for the reason that it’s hard to imagine they could be worse. If Demko doesn’t play regularly, they finish around 75 points for 30 or 31st overall. If Demko returns for real, they’re going to get ten points more and finish 25 or 26.
So my guess is 75 points, 30th place. Following up on that finish, history tells us they will drop two places in the draft lottery.
Doug Perry:
28th-29th.
The Flames looked horrible last night against an AHL team. Detroit is a dumpster fire like the Canucks were last year. At least one other is going to collapse. Hope Demko stay IR or we might finish much higher.
It’s ok to try and we likely will. I hope we lose close ones or we could be 23rd to 24th.
Agent86Fan:
Stanley Cup!
DerekP63:
76 points, ahead of Calgary and Seattle. I think they finish 28th/29th overall depending on how Chicago fares without Bedard and how Detroit manages with the Larkin situation. My hope though is that they finish no better than 30th to stay in the top-five picks.
Kearnsie:
Canucks are gonna finish 5th in the Pacific. Behind the Kraken, ahead of the Ducks, Kings, and Flames. Canucks will have 80 points.
kanucked:
There are two more games this year and Manny is a better coach, so I think they get more points. I think they will do better in the first half of the year and be on a 72 point pace for the first 50 games. I assume that they continue to trade veterans and finish the last 34 games on a 58 point pace. That leaves them at 68 points. I think that will be 31st place with the Flames finishing at 67 points.
Richard Hickey:
(Winner of the author’s weekly award for eloquence)
I predict last place on the back of 69 points.
Zero depth. Injuries and we are quickly into the Jack Thompsons and Matt Stienburgs of the AHL.
Every other roster is better position by position.
The PP may be decent, but the PK will be awful again. Hope springs eternal, but reality is a sledgehammer to the feet (Misery style).
akidd:
I think Canucks will manage for last place. They have to. They need to draft that elite talent. So, if the team is too cohesive and if Lankinen plays too well, they will have to adapt. There are a lot of tools at their disposal. Goaltending, playing ahl players, etc.
32nd place – 62 points.
Magic Head:
I want the Canucks to finish in last place but I don’t know if they can. I want them to avoid making the same mistake Yzerman did in Detroit by not having a single top-three draft pick his entire tenure. He missed the playoffs for seven straight years including the past three consecutive drafts where Detroit had the 15th, 13th, and 15th overall pick. Mushy middle = a pile of mush. It only took a few drafts to transform San Jose from the basement to one of the future’s more exciting teams. Now there will be some delusional people who will say “look at Edmonton, look at Buffalo, all those top-two picks and no Cup.” Sure, but during the salary cap era, the vast majority of multiple Cup winners built their rosters either by drafting top-two talent, or trading guys they drafted in the top-two to acquire the necessary players for them to win multiple Cups. That’s not an accident.
Alex h:
If anyone predicted we’d finish dead last with 58 points, they’d be called crazy. This roster is worse than last season, but give RJ and Manny some credit, we’re on track to back-to-back 58-point seasons.
james:
The Canucks will finish 30th overall with 65 points, officially securing the 3rd highest possible odds to drop two spots in the draft lottery…
18 points will be earned in October before the league realizes that the teams only strategy is to pass it to Bulis (Buium) and pray…
17 points collected purely off of Thatcher Demko making 58 saves a night during his total of 16 games played…
14 points scraped together from loser point overtime losses where they give away a breakaway eight seconds into 3-on-3 play…
Finally, 16 points won during a random, meaningless eight-game win-streak in April that will naturally tank our tank…
