The Vancouver Canucks have started the 2024-25 campaign with some ups (the first period of game one against the Calgary Flames and Thursday night’s matchup with the Florida Panthers) and downs (everything in between those two events).
While their first win of the season on Thursday certainly cooled down the panic that was slowly but surely starting to brew in the market, it may come as a surprise to know that this year’s Canucks have begun this season the same way as last year’s team did.
Sort of.
With two overtime losses and a victory to their name, the 2024-25 Canucks have four points through four games, the same number of wins as the 2023-24 Canucks, who went on to put up 109 regular season points en route to winning the Pacific Division.
The Canucks opened last season with two back-to-back wins over the 2024 Stanley Cup participant Edmonton Oilers to start the season with a record of 2-0. They were then shut out by the Philadelphia Flyers before dropping their next game to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Now, it remains to be seen if this year’s team will go on the same sort of heater that last year’s team did following their first four games of the season, and that will likely end up being the real difference here.
The 2023-24 Canucks went 8-0-1 in their next nine games, giving them a crucial head start to the Pacific Division while the would-be second-place Oilers faltered. While this year’s Oilers appear to have gotten their slow start figured out without the need to fire a coach, this is all to illustrate that despite the Canucks not securing their first victory of the season until game four, those overtime efforts certainly were not all for naught.
In fact, it’s put them in the exact same spot as they were in last year from a standings perspective, and everything worked out just fine last season, didn’t it?
The Canucks will get their first chance to go 8-0-1 in their next nine games later this afternoon when they take on the Flyers on the road. Puck drop is at 4 PM Pacific, and we’ll have all your game day needs covered right here at CanucksArmy.com!
