The Vancouver Canucks have selected goaltender Aleksei Medvedev with the 47th overall pick of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
Medvedev stands at 6’2 and put up a .912 save percentage through 34 games in his first season with the OHL’s London Knights.
Here is what Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis wrote about Medvedev in his final rankings:
Like any goalie who grows, Medvedev needed time to adjust to his larger frame. He was drafted to the OHL in 2023 as a 5-foot-11 keeper but stands 6-foot-2 now. The rookie OHLer was a huge part of London’s regular season success, putting up some excellent numbers alongside CHL veteran Austin Elliott. Medvedev is a quick goalie who has a bit of an unorthodox hunch-back style, but his pure athleticism wins out more often than not. There just aren’t many flaws in how he commands the crease – scouts love him.
The Canucks selecting a goaltender in round two definitely comes as a bit of a surprise, but they clearly believe in this player and it will be interesting to hear from Canucks director of scouting Todd Harvey later today about this pick.
When it comes to their NHL goaltending, the Canucks currently have Kevin Lankinen locked up for four more seasons, and are reportedly making progress on an extension for Thatcher Demko. They have Arturs Silovs, Nikita Tolopilo, Ty Young, and Aku Koskenvuo in their pipeline as well.
The Canucks kicked off their drafting festivities on Friday night by selecting Seattle Thunderbirds centre Braeden Cootes. We wrote extensively about Cootes last night. To read Patrik Allvin’s comments about Cootes, click here. To read what Dave Hall wrote about Cootes, click here!
