The Vancouver Canucks are rumoured to be among a handful of NHL teams interested in Chicago Blackhawks forward Lukas Reichel. NHL insiders David Pagnotta and Frank Seravalli both connected Reichel to the Canucks on Wednesday morning.
Here is what Pagnotta wrote:
“The Chicago Blackhawks have been actively exploring the trade market in an attempt to move forward Lukas Reichel…The Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks are among the teams believed to have interest in Reichel, who was drafted 17th overall by Chicago in the 2020 NHL Draft.”
On Sportsnet 650’s Halford and Brough, Seravalli said this about Reichel:
“I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re one of the teams that’s interested in Lucas Reichel, who’s available from the Chicago Blackhawks. Look, a really talented winger with speed that I think has so much more to give but hasn’t found any consistency at the NHL level…In fact, his game is kind of infuriating to watch because you know that he has all the tools, but hasn’t strung it all together over the course of a full 82 games. And so, the Hawks are very likely to be moving on from him over the next five to six days, maybe even sooner than that. It’s not going to cost you much… Think mid to late round pick. Is that the type of flyer that the Vancouver Canucks should be taking at this point in time?”
Last year, Reichel played his first full season in the NHL, with eight goals and 22 points in 70 appearances, sitting multiple times as a healthy scratch. The year prior, he had five goals and 16 points in 65 games played. That season, he spent 10 games in the AHL with the Rockford IceHogs in February, tallying a goal and seven assists. Arguably his most impressive season so far was in 2022-23, when he put up seven goals and 15 points in just 23 appearances with the Blackhawks, averaging a career-high of 16:22 TOI/game.
Reichel is entering the second and final season of his contract with the Blackhawks, with a cap hit this year of $1.2 million. Set to become a restricted free agent this coming summer, he’s a low-cost and low-risk addition for any team looking for a reclamation project.
Born in Nürnberg, Germany, the young winger played juniors in his home country before he was drafted 17th overall at the 2020 entry draft by the Blackhawks. He already has multiple international appearances to his name, appearing with Germany at the 2020 World Juniors, and four of the last five IIHF World Championships. At the Worlds Championships, he has eight goals and 22 points in 22 games played.
The Canucks found out this week that they will be without winger Nils Höglander for 8-10 weeks, and Reichel might be an interesting low-cost player for the Canucks to take a flyer on.
