The Vancouver Canucks have fired general manager Patrik Allvin, according to a report from Tomas Ros of Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. Ros’ report has been confirmed by multiple sources.
The Canucks themselves took to social media to confirm the firing, writing: “Jim Rutherford, President, Hockey Operations, announced today that Patrik Allvin has been relieved of his duties as General Manager.”
That likely indicates that Rutherford’s job is safe, and that he will be the one conducting the search for the next Canucks general manager.
Allvin, 51, was initially hired by the Canucks back in January 2022, after a search by president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford, whom Allvin worked under as an assistant GM with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
After winning the Pacific Division in 2023-24, the two seasons that have followed have been absolutely dreadful for the Canucks. The situation between JT Miller — who Allvin and Rutherford chose over Bo Horvat — and Elias Pettersson — who Allvin and Rutherford committed $92.8 million too — got so bad that Miller simply had to be traded.
And of course, there were plenty of misses along the way under this management group that have led to the Canucks ending up where they are today, which is why ownership likely felt they had no choice but to make a change. Allvin’s firing comes ahead of what is undoubtedly going to be a pivotal offseason in the Canucks’ rebuild and in their franchise history as a whole.
The Canucks just wrapped up one of their worst seasons in franchise history, finishing dead-last in the NHL standings with a 25-49-8 record. They now have the best odds at landing the first overall pick at May 5th’s draft lottery, and will need to be intentional in everything they do from this point forward. Truly, this offseason and the next couple of years that follow will shape the next decade of Canucks hockey, and it’s extremely important that they get this one right.
More to come.
