A New Year might mean a new home for Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood sooner rather than later.
In a 2025-26 season full of disappointing stories for the Canucks, Sherwood’s hot start has been one of the few bright spots, and he’s had every NHL general manager on notice. In the most recent episode of DFO Rundown: Insider Edition, David Pagnotta gave the public a new update on where talks are at for trading the fan favourite winger.
“I was going back and forth with a couple people about [Sherwood’s] situation. It sounds like over the last few days, things have picked up with respect to Kiefer Sherwood and the discussions that are going on out there,” Pagnotta said.
“I asked a couple of people I was texting with, ‘Is the timeline closer to Olympic break? Or can we see something at some point in January?’ Both messages I got were, ‘Don’t be surprised if something happens sooner than later.’ So it sounds like there is momentum with respect to Kiefer Sherwood trade discussions,” Pagnotta continued. “The Canucks don’t want to put themselves in a position where they overplay their hand in this one.”
The Columbus, Ohio, native has 16 goals and 20 points through 39 games this season. Sherwood is also picking up where he left off last season, when he set an NHL record for hits in a single season, as he sits second behind only Yakov Trenin with 184 hits. Those two traits, along with his ability to play up and down the lineup and in all three phases of the game, at just a $1.5 million cap hit, make him a desirable target for most teams around the league.
“Everybody knows he’s available. Everybody knows what the price tag is and the different variations tied to it. First round pick plus or equivalent value, that’s what the Canucks are looking for in this,” Pagnotta said. “And the teams that were circling before have re-engaged; the Canucks have engaged in conversations.”
As for how long it could take for the Canucks to pull the trigger on a deal, Pagnotta predicted it could come as soon as the next few weeks.
“Two messages I got literally before jumping on here with [host Irfaan Gaffar], don’t be surprised if something happens in the first half of January. So over the next week or two, maybe even sooner. But it does seem like the finality of this situation is he will be moved. It’s just a matter of how quickly, and can the Canucks maximize on what their return is going to be?”
Management has been fielding offers for their forechecking forward for over a month, and according to reports from Pagnotta, they might be close to finding their ideal trade package for Sherwood.
