After being placed on NHL waivers on Sunday, defenceman Jack Thompson has cleared waivers and will report to AHL Abbotsford.
The 24-year-old defenceman was injured prior to Vancouver Canucks training camp and did not skate with the main group. He remained on the NHL roster while he healed from the injury, and will now join the Abbotsford Canucks blueline, which has been providing offence under new head coach Ryan Papaioannou.
Assistant captain Jimmy Schuldt and second-year prospect Sawyer Mynio currently lead the way with five points: Schuldt with two goals and three assists in eight games, and Mynio with one goal and four assists in seven games. Veteran Cole Clayton has one goal and four points in four games. Gavin White is tied with rookie Tim Rego and top defenceman Kirill Kudryavtsev with three points: White with two goals and one assist in eight games, Rego with one goal and two assists in five games, and Kudryavtsev with three assists in three games. Joe Arntsen has a pair of assists in his seven games, while Isaac Belliveau is pointless through his two appearances.
As an offensive-minded blueliner who put up over a point per game on a poor Abbotsford team last season, Thompson could flourish in a new situation under Papaioannou.
After dropping the first three games of the season, Abbotsford find themselves on a five-game winning streak. They return to action on Wednesday, October 28, on the road against Thompson’s old team, the San Jose Barracuda. This won’t be Thompson’s first homecoming, as he played in a back-to-back set against the Barracuda last season, scoring one goal and registering five shots on goal.
In 217 career AHL games, Thompson has 23 goals and 81 assists for 104 points, with a minus-two rating split among the Syracuse Crunch, San Jose Barracuda, and Abbotsford Canucks. He has added two assists through 11 AHL postseason games, both coming in a 2023 run with the Crunch. He was held scoreless in five postseason games with the Barracuda in 2025 – the same year the Abbotsford Canucks won the Calder Cup.
