The Vancouver Canucks (3-13-1) begin a two-game road trip when they visit the Winnipeg Jets (5-8-3) at Canada Life Centre. Tonight’s game begins at 5 pm PT.
The Canucks are looking for their second win in 15 games while the Jets are shooting for their second win in 11.
What we know
The Canucks held a full team morning skate in Winnipeg, but lineup information was hard to come by. Leevi Meriläinen is expected to return to the net after getting the night off Tuesday against the Anaheim Ducks. Prior to that, he had started four straight and seven of nine. Tom Willander was a surprise scratch against the Ducks after tweaking a lower-body injury at the morning skate. He did travel with the team and is an option to return to the lineup tonight.
Vancouver dropped their third straight game, falling 5-4 to Anaheim in a spirited contest on Tuesday. Jake DeBrusk snapped a nine-game drought with a pair of goals while Linus Karlsson and Liam Öhgren had the other goals. After being a healthy scratch on October 22nd, Öhgren has found the back of the net in three of his last four outings.
Brock Boeser has points in back-to-back games and has three goals and three assists in his last five outings.
The Canucks need to get Marco Rossi going. The Austrian centre picked up an assist on Öhgren’s first period power play goal two nights ago, but has now gone 13 games without scoring and has just two helpers in that time.
While wins have been hard to come by, the Canucks power play continues to show signs of promise. It clicked twice on Tuesday and has now cashed in in six of the last eight games, converting at 25.9% over that time frame. Elias Pettersson leads the team with four power play goals on the season.
The flip side of that equation is that the Canucks surrendered three power play goals to Anaheim, dropping their penalty kill to 63.2% on the season. On the road, however, the PK is at 57.7%, having allowed 11 goals in 26 shorthanded situations. They have allowed at least one power play in seven of their nine road games so far this season.
The Opponent
The Jets return to action after a comeback win for the ages, erasing a 4-0 deficit with less than three minutes to play and stunned the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 in overtime on Tuesday. Dylan Samberg scored the winner at 3:30 of OT.
Kyle Connor scored twice and sits second in the NHL with 13 goals. Six of them – including the tying marker with 33 seconds to play on Tuesday – have come on the power play. He leads the Jets with 17 points while Mark Scheifele has 14.
Dawson Mercer has a pair of assists in six games since being acquired as part of the return in the Connor Hellebuyck trade with New Jersey.
Viggo Bjorck, currently the youngest player on an NHL roster and the only 2008-born player currently in the league, is still looking for his first point. The eighth overall pick in June’s draft has appeared in all 16 Jets games, has recorded 13 shots, and is averaging 13:48 of ice time.
Tuesday’s win in Montreal snapped a nine-game winless skid (0-7-2) which followed an impressive 4-1-1 start.
Stuart Skinner is slated to make his third straight start in goal tonight.
News and notes
The Jets swept the three-game season series last season, including a pair of 3-2 overtime victories. Cole Perfetti and Josh Morrissey had the OT winners.
The Canucks have struggled mightily in the Manitoba capital, going 4-16-1 in their last 21 visits dating back to 2015.
The referees for tonight’s game are Brandon Schraeder and Wes McCauley.
