On Wednesday morning, the Vancouver Canucks pulled the trigger on a trade to bring Evander Kane to Vancouver, sending a fourth round pick back to the Edmonton Oilers in the process.
We’ve broken down the trade plenty already here at CanucksArmy. From what it means for the Canucks’ salary cap picture moving forward, to Patrik Allvin’s justification for the deal, and much more.
But how do Canucks fans feel about the trade? We asked, and you answered.
CanucksArmy comment section:
Bruce Donice: Kane only has a year left in his contract, he can score, and he is physical. On the last year of his contract if he is still wanting to play after this coming season he will come to play, and be on his best behavior. We all know that he has killed his welcome with every team he has played with. San Jose players voted him off the team, Winnipeg players basicly threw him out. But Kane’s time in Edmonton they wasn’t anything negative coming out of the dressing room. Sure he didn’t play last season, but did get benched in the playoffs and knocked down to the bottom of the lineup. Like that he can score and enjoys playing physical but… For those wanting the Canucks to find that player with some upside potential that costs nothing you got your ask. Kane cost nothing but a fourth round pick, Ottawa’s fourth that they had acquired. Kane on ice performance has been consistent, but it’s his off ice behavior has been less than stellar. Kane will either make Quinn Hughes so happy he will sign his extension as soon as he is able. Or piss QH off so much he asks for a trade. Worst part is the Canucks just acquired an older power forward, who has had many injuries for a cap hit of $5,125,000 and have given the Oilers the same amount in Cap relief. Now the team only has $7 million left in cap. Again it’s either going to work or it’s going to be an absolute s*** show. For those wanting the team to take a flier on a player who has had success in the past for nothing, be careful what you asked for.
defenceman factory: I don’t mind this trade at all. Doesn’t mean I’m confident it will be a big win but management doesn’t have a lot of options. Giving up only a 4th for someone capable of a top 6 role isn’t bad. Only being committed to it for a year is also good. It reduces the likelihood of a big expensive mistake in free agency. Kane has a reputation for immaturity and some character flaws. Don’t recall any reports of those coming out in Edmonton. Most people grow up eventually. Kane is a gamer. Years ago Kane fought Chara and some would say he won that fight. Chara was on the tail end of his career but it was still a gutsy move. This trade is far better news than an Arvidsson or Zegras trade.
Matt Bettingfield: Canucks just can’t resist the drama. It’s in their DNA
Hockey Bunker: Like him or hate him, his menacing presence is a nice addition to cut down on the shenanigans Hughes Petey and others face. May inspire Joshua to play tougher on a regular basis. The cost is almost free….the risk on a one year deal is minimal.
canuckforlife: Kane for 1 year. Can score; on a top line in the final year of a contract he will be motivated. Could easily replace Boeser’s goals. Brings some grit and truculence. Could he shot-gun on EP40’s line?
The cost, a 4th round pick, no assets moved at all, keep them for antoher move. And again only a 1 year term.
Quite happy they spent the money this way rather than some 30-32 yr old FA wanting $ and term.
Jibsys: I actually don’t hate this. Kane has been known to have some character issues but hopefully he is maturing and he is the big bodied gritty winger that many of us have been begging for. If anything, this should make for some more entertaining hockey to watch this season.
kanucked: I like this move. It’s certainly a gamble, but Kane only has 1 year left on his deal. He usually becomes a problem after the first year. I think the Canucks only do this deal if the leadership group in the room wants him.
Appleboy: We are now down to 7 mil of cap space. How will you get a 2C. I sense a player for player trade coming. Can these manage to win a trade. Hronek and Demko.

Cal Cal: I love Boeser… but not at 7 years $8.5 million. It would be a bigger mistake to re-sign him to that contract. Kane replaced his size and offence! But obviously not Boeser’s character!
Eric Kai Ho Chan: Should we sign Tony DeAngelo next? Great on the ice, just rumors of being bad in the locker room. Maybe those rumors are overblown too.
Paul Harper: A bonehead move like this makes me question whether management has a plan for this team. Kane is an aging dirty player with an attitude problem. He’s toxic in the dressing room. This is not good.
ryanventura604: I have mixed emotions. But if you watch how the last few Cups have been won, who has gone deep currently, every team needs a bad guy. Let’s give him a chance and reserve judgement for later. Let’s see how the hometown boy does. Most certainly isn’t perfect and no one is. But let’s see how he does.
doomsdayemoji: Imagine watching the last two seasons and thinking “you know what our locker room needs? Evander Kane!”
hkywithdubs: 1 year left. If Canucks are out of a playoff spot, they could trade Kane at the deadline and get more assets back in my opinion.
_d.o_h: Trade is a lot better than fans are suggesting. We still have enough cap roughly to go after a 2C. Suter is asking too much and potentially just had an inflated season because he saw time on ice he’ll probably never see again. We have a lot of depth from our Abby team that deserves a slot on the team so I like this trade a lot. Kane is a type of player to turn to like on your own team.
