Mynio, 19, was drafted by the Canucks in the third round (89th overall) of the 2023 NHL draft. The Kamloops, BC native has spent all three years of his junior hockey with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League (WHL).
Over his three seasons in Seattle, he’s scored 25 goals and 70 assists for 95 points in 178 games while boasting a plus-48 rating. Two seasons ago, Mynio helped the Thunderbirds reach their second WHL championship, scoring one goal and three assists for four points in 19 playoff games.
After capturing the WHL championship, they advanced to their third-ever Memorial Cup. As the host city, they debuted in the tournament in 1992 and earned their spot in 2017 and 2023.
Mynio became the focal point of the Thunderbirds’ defence in the 2023-2024 season once former Chicago Blackhawks 2022 seventh overall pick Kevin Korchinski graduated to the NHL. As the leader of the defence, Mynio posted a 16-goal, 53-point 2023-2024 season. His efforts earned him a one-game trial with the Abbotsford Canucks last season.
The Thunderbird defenceman made his Canucks debut last night against the Seattle Kraken. Mynio was given an essential role on the team as he started on the top pairing with Filip Hronek. Head coach Rick Tocchet had high praise for the left-shot defenceman after the game.
“[Mynio] is a great prospect for us. He’s poised out there,” Tocchet said.
Mynio will stay in Seattle to join the Thunderbirds for his fourth WHL season as he continues to build his resume in hopes of making this year’s Team Canada’s World Junior Championship roster.
