Canucks’ Adam Novotný has massive 4-point night in return to OHL

Whatever the Vancouver Canucks taught Adam Novotný during the prospect showcase, training camp, and preseason clearly stuck with him, as he exploded offensively in his season debut for the Peterborough Petes.
Trailing 1-0 in the first period, Novotný equalized the game in style.
Playing high up in the defensive zone, Novotný was in perfect position to break up the cross-ice pass and knock the puck out of the zone. He gained speed to pressure the puck carrier, who panicked and didn’t get enough on the pass to get it out of danger, allowing Novotný to skate onto the puck and head in on the breakaway. And just watch what he does next.
He kept the puck away from the defender on the far side, then cut to his forehand, avoided the goaltender’s poke check, and slid it across the goal line.
Chef’s kiss.
But he wasn’t done there.
Less than 30 seconds after getting his team on the board, Novotný sneaks in from the top of the zone while tracking his teammate behind the net. He fakes the defender into thinking he’s going to the left circle, then cuts inside; when the defender looks away, Novotný cuts to the net and is left wide open for a shot right in front of the net.

That’s some nice deception from Novotný to create the open space for himself.
The offence continued for Novotný, as he logged seven shots on goal in just two periods of action.
Adam Novotný has been dominant through two periods thus far. His two goals and seven (7!) shots are impressive, but he's driving play every single time his skates hit the ice. Its shaping up to be a fun year.
Fast forward to the third period, with the Petes on the power play, Novotný rips a shot from the right circle. His attempt was blocked, but it caused enough chaos for Leon Kolarik to bury the loose puck and extend the Petes’ lead to four.

In the dying minutes of the game, Novotný powered a pass through the legs to spring Cooper Dennis for a chance on the far side to log his fourth point of the night.

Novotný’s huge four-point night earned him the first star of the contest. The OHL recognized his first goal as the Play of the Night on Thursday.

While Novotný is probably a little disappointed he didn’t make the Canucks out of training camp, going back to the OHL, where he can truly dominate against players his age, is best for his long-term development.
He will be able to take what he learned from his brief time around NHL players and coaches and apply it at the OHL level. And he did just that in his season debut on Thursday with a massive four-point outing.
