The Vancouver Canucks keep finding new ways to lose. As if a 29th place finish courtesy a dismal 69 point season wasn’t enough; the NHL Entry Draft Lottery twisted the dagger when it shuffled the Canucks three spots down from a second overall pick to fifth.
Canucks president of hockey operations Trevor Linden, who represented Vancouver at the Lottery, spoke to the club’s fans in a video for Canucks TV after the results of the draw to help soften the blow.
“Hey Canucks Fans, we got the fifth overall pick and we’re going to pick a great player that’s going to contribute to the foundation of this team for many years. We’re also going to do an excellent job throughout the draft. We have six picks in the top 120. So, thanks for your support, and we’ll see you over the summer.”
To Linden’s credit, he’s handling the news with aplomb. I can’t imagine how difficult it was to get in front of a camera nad talk about today’s three consecutive lottery losses with such a positive spin. Such is life when you’re the face of a franchise, I suppose.
One thing that caught my attention was the bit about the Canucks having six picks in the top 120. That’s not factually accurate. Not yet, anyways. The Canucks hold five picks in the top 120 of the draft.
I think it’s safe to assume the Columbus Blue Jackets will cede their second round selection in this year’s draft as compensation for hiring former Canucks head coach John Tortorella, and that will give the Canucks their sixth pick in the top 120. That hasn’t happened yet, though.
Perhaps Linden is confident he’ll receive that pick. Or he downright knows. That would be a nice addition to the Canucks’ draft haul.
