After a full team day off Sunday, the Vancouver Canucks got back to work on Monday morning at Rogers Arena. And they had a new look as they hit the ice. Hours after a league-wide reveal, the Canucks players broke in new Hometown Remix equipment.
While skaters showed off new gloves and helmets, Kevin Lankinen debuted a whole new silver setup with his goalie gear. The Canucks announced this morning they will wear the Hometown Remix jerseys on six occasions this season, starting with a November 13th game against JT Miller and the New York Rangers.

What we saw

As for the practice itself, the Canucks showed a couple of new looks from the way they lined up in Saturday’s 4-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. A struggling Drew O’Connor swapped places with Liam Öhgren, so Öhgren skated with Marco Rossi and Jonathan Lekkerimäki, while O’Connor was on left wing with Abbotsford call-up Jacob Quillan and Linus Karlsson. Quillan made his Canucks debut against his former team on Saturday without the benefit of a practice with the NHL club. So today was his first chance to participate in a practice with his new teammates.
The top line of Jake DeBrusk with Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser remained intact. Boeser is holding the hot hand right now with goals in three of his last four games. And Manny Malhotra is hoping he has found a fourth line he can trust. The coach liked what he saw from Max Sasson between veterans Paul Cotter and Brendan Gallagher on Saturday night.
Arsheep Bains worked into a few rotations on the fourth line, but appeared to be the extra forward at practice.
On defence, the team’s top four remained untouched, with Elias Pettersson paired with Filip Hronek at practice while Jamie Oleksiak skated alongside Tom Willander. Victor Mancini played the right side on a pairing with Zeev Buim, leaving Luke Schenn and Guillaume Brisebois to form the extra duo. Today is Hronek’s 29th birthday and Schenn’s 37th. Twenty skaters and four goalies older than Schenn have played at least one game in the league so far this season.
The Canucks conclude a brief two-game homestand and open their November schedule on Tuesday night against Anaheim. The team will then fly to Winnipeg to face the Jets on Thursday, and they will visit Edmonton on Saturday night.

What we heard

Manny Malhotra provided a slight update on injured centre Filip Chytil (shoulder), who missed Saturday’s game and will not play Tuesday: “He’s progressing along. He feels better daily. He’s in the gym and keeping himself fit. But nothing other than that. He’s just getting back to a level where he feels comfortable with it.”
Malhotra on what he liked from Cotter-Sasson-Gallagher on Saturday night: “I think the consistency and the energy they brought to the game. They did a really good job of doing the things we’ve asked in terms of getting in on the forecheck. It was a very simple game and they were rewarded for it. The simplicity of getting the puck to the net and looking for rebounds is a timeless recipe that seems to work. But it comes down to the willingness to do those things and they did a good job of it.”
Malhotra on son Caleb’s spectacular overtime winner for Boston University against Maine on Saturday night: “I was really happy. Really happy. It was obviously a really nice goal and it a really good win for the group to be able to come back from two and get it done in overtime.”
