With their recent run of injuries to key forwards, reports indicate that Vancouver will sign soon-to-be 39-year old free agent winger Vinny Prospal to an AHL tryout contract as soon as tomorrow. Per Elliotte Friedman:
Read past the jump for more.
As Elliotte Friedman mentioned, the veteran Prospal has a very respectable 765 points in 1,108 career games, split between the Flyers, Senators, Panthers, Lightning, Ducks, Rangers and Blue Jackets. Last year, he scored 12 goals and added 18 assists in 48 games, finishing 1st on Columbus in scoring.
He also carried some solid but unspectacular underlying metrics, with a +3 CorsiRel in some decently favourable deployment. It’s also worth noting that he’s a John Tortorella favourite, arriving in Tampa Bay the season after they won the cup – a year in which Prospal had 80 points in 81 games.
All in all, this is a very good no-risk depth move for Vancouver, and it possibly means that they plan to move one of their wingers (most likely Burrows) to centre should Santorelli and Henrik be out for a significant length of time. Of course, Prospal has to make the most of his tryout with Utica first, who are in Abbotsford this weekend to play the Heat.
