The Vancouver Canucks have made “significant progress” with centre Elias Pettersson on what is believed to be an eight year contract extension, according to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli:

Pettersson stated prior to this season that he didn’t want to negotiate a contract in-season, but with reports suggesting the Canucks were growing frustrated at not having much indication from their star forward whether he wanted to remain in Vancouver beyond this season, it looks like the two sides sat down and figured something out to help quiet the noise.

Drafted fifth overall in 2017, Pettersson’s first contract after his entry-level deal was a three-year deal at $7.35 million annually that is set to expire at the end of this season. Pettersson was set to become a restricted free agent at the end of this season, and an eight-year deal would kick in at the beginning of next season.

Pettersson, 25, is on pace to eclipse the 100 point mark for the second straight season, as he currently sits at 29 goals and 46 assists through 61 games played this year.

Through 386 regular-season NHL games, all played with the Canucks, Pettersson has tallied 165 goals and 233 assists for 398 career points.
