Report: Canucks expected to waive Frank Corrado

Oct 5, 2015, 12:04 EDTUpdated:

The Vancouver Canucks are reportedly set to place 22-year-old right-handed defenseman Frank Corrado on waivers on Monday, according to Sportsnet’s Dan Murphy:
Considering the club had the option of placing Alex Biega, 27, and his unlikely-to-be-claimed $325k AHL slaary on waivers, this is a head scratcher.
Corrado was a fifth-round pick of the club back in 2011 and debuted as an NHL player during the lockout shortened 2013 season. The club, in fact, believed that Corrado was one one of their top-six defenseman that season and opted to burn the first-year of his entry-level contract. That decision is what’s set the stage for today’s spot of imprudent asset management.
Considering Corrado’s age, his skating ability, and the organization’s relative lack of young defensemen, this could prove to be a significant misstep. As for the likelihood that Corrado makes it through waivers, I’d suggest that it’s extremely low. For a rebuilding club like Arizona or Toronto, the opportunity to claim Corrado is akin to finding money.
