Plays of the Week: November 1st

Nov 1, 2015, 22:15 ESTUpdated:
Amazing how quickly things can change, isn’t it? A week ago, Jake Virtanen and Jared McCann had uncertain futures. The Canucks still hadn’t picked up a win at home, the Habs looked invincible and Richard Bachman was still a figment of our imaginations. Yet here we are, with the tables turned. Let’s take a look back at what happened between then and now:
The Games
“Snapping the Canadiens’ record-setting win streak is a good way to cap a disappointing homestand. Though the Canucks only managed four points in five home games, they removed a good deal of that bitter taste with their solid outing on Tuesday.” -Thomas Drance

“Now that this game is behind them, Vancouver can focus on solidifying their dominance in the absolute trash heap that is currently the Pacific Division. Jared McCann can keep being underrated but incredible, Radim Vrbata can continue being my favorite member of the Canucks, and hopefully Jacob Markstrom will be back soon.” -Cat Silverman

Best of CanucksArmy
The regression to this degree is also, somewhat ironically, overly skewed in the opposite direction and unsustainably unfortunate in its own right. Moving forward they probably won’t continue to lose one-goal games by the barrel full, even if the truth of the matter is that the Canucks should wind up somewhere back in the middle of the pack this year. -Dimitri Filipovic
“If Desjardins’ continues to be skeptical about McCann’s play on the defensive side of the puck and monitors his young forward’s minutes in the third period of close games, well, that would be a well founded tactical choice as well. Especially as McCann works through the two-way growing pains that are inevitable for a 19-year-old centreman at the NHL level.” -Thomas Drance
“My main goal will be to bring you the best and brightest minds from around the league, to talk all things Canucks, hockey and analytics. This will be running weekly, schedule allowing. I intend to bring on anywhere from two to three guests a week, with varying takes on hockey and the Canucks in particular.” -JD Burke
“I certainly wouldn’t expect Vancouver to be any sort of a powerhouse this season, but it does seem possible for them to continue on getting points at roughly the clip they are now. 11 points in 9 games works out to be about 100 points over the course of a season – right around where they were last season. That’s probably far too optimistic, but the context is a little different this year.” -Jeremy Davis
“All the same, there’s a pretty reasonable case to be made that Markstrom benefits from an increased workload. It would certainly explain why he’s struggled to establish himself as an NHL backup and only ever showed as quasi-competent in a brief stretch as a starter.” -JD Burke
