Philadelphia sports fans sure are passionate.
On Friday, a Twitter/X user who goes by the name of “Tony Escargot” put out a post asking if fans would be comfortable donating to a GoFundMe to “raise money to fly a plane over XFinity Mobile [Arena] with a sign that said ‘FIRE TOCCHET'”
And it turns out, they certainly were.
Less than two hours after his original post, the same user put out another post with a screenshot of the GoFundMe page, showing that the fundraising goal had already been met in under an hour.
According to the fundraiser’s page on GoFundMe.com, four users donated $100, four more donated $50, and 117 others donated the remaining amount, totalling $2,247 (at the time of this writing) and surpassing the original goal of $2,000 USD.
The outrage comes after the Flyers’ 14th loss of the season on Thursday night, a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the New York Rangers. The Flyers have a 4-10-4 record and sit dead last in the Eastern Conference and 30th in the overall NHL standings. Here’s what the GoFundMe’s creator wrote about the campaign:
“Daniel Briere, Keith Jones, and Comcast have decimated the Philadelphia Flyers by hiring Rick Tocchet as head coach.
The front office thinks the “Fire Tocchet” crowd is purely online but Tony would like to prove otherwise.
This fundraiser is to raise funds for flying 2 planes over Xfinity Mobile Arena during a Flyers afternoon game with signs that read “FIRE TOCCHET” & maybe a photo of Tocchet wearing a clown nose.”
The flyover is slated for the Flyers’ November 27th game against Tocchet’s former team, the Vancouver Canucks. While that choice of opponent might seem intentional, it’s more of a coincidence, as the GoFundMe creator said they need the game to be an afternoon game for the flyover to work. That game will start at 3 PM ET.
Firing Tocchet would seem like something the Flyers really don’t want to do, as he’s been on the hot seat since October and only in year two of a big-ticket head coaching contract. The Flyers clearly had a lot of confidence in Tocchet, as they handed him a five-year deal that makes him one of the NHL’s highest-paid coaches. That deal, of course, came after Tocchet decided to depart the Canucks’ organization after they offered him a similar big-ticket contract after two and a half seasons behind their bench.
And in case you were wondering what happens if Tocchet is fired before that game against the Canucks on the 27th, the organizer said he’ll attempt to refund everyone their money or use it “toward something else.”
Stay tuned.
