The Ottawa Senators have traded their captain, Brady Tkachuk, to the Florida Panthers. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun was the first NHL insider to break the trade, which came down Sunday afternoon.
In return, the Senators netted the 9th overall pick this year, 25th overall this year, Florida’s 2029 first-round pick, and a 2030 second-round pick.
Tkachuk will head to the Sunshine State to play with his brother Matthew, with whom he was teammates at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Like many American players playing in NHL Canadian markets, there was plenty of speculation recently that Tkachuk, who the Senators originally drafted fourth overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, wanted to head south of the border. That indeed appears to be the case, as LeBrun added the following context:
“My understanding is the Senators also had conversations with Carolina and Vegas, other teams that were on Tkachuk’s list. I also think Minnesota was on the list. Four-team list but in the end, Brady obviously wanted to go join his brother in Florida. Senators made the best of a tough situation.”

Of course, Vancouver Canucks fans have seen this movie before. The Canucks traded their American-born captain, Quinn Hughes, to the Minnesota Wild back in December, after Hughes indicated he wouldn’t be re-signing with the club long term at the expiry of his current contract. In Detroit, Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin also recently requested a trade, though that seems to have far more to do with winning than it does geography.
Through 572 career games, all with the Senators, Tkachuk has put up 213 goals and 250 assists. The Senators made the playoffs each of the last two seasons, but were bounced from the playoffs in the first round both years. Most recently, the Senators were swept by the eventual Stanley Cup-winning Carolina Hurricanes in round one.
Tkachuk heads to a Florida team that was banged up after back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2023-24 and 24-25. The Panthers failed to qualify for the playoffs this season, but look poised to be right back to being contenders in the upcoming 2026-27 season, and this trade certainly increases the chances of that being the case.
More to come.
