Welcome back to NHL Notebook — the series here at Daily Faceoff Vancouver where we deliver you news and notes from around the National Hockey League — oftentimes through a Vancouver Canucks-tinted lens!
The first domino fell surrounding the two players that took up nearly all of the trade chatter this offseason at the end of last week, when Connor Hellebuyck was traded to the New Jersey Devils. Nearly a week later, the other player has grown frustrated that he has not been moved yet and is taking action in an attempt to speed things up.

Larkin sitting out until he is traded

Following Thursday’s morning skate ahead of tonight’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan told reporters that Dylan Larkin will not play tonight and that general manager Shawn Horcoff will address the situation later.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Larkin will not play until he is traded.
Friedman later put out an article with his latest hearings around the situation:
“Those same sources indicated Larkin felt he had done right by them playing through his trade request, but ‘had enough’ and it is time for the move to happen. The Red Wings have made it very clear they have a certain bar that must be leaped for anyone to acquire Larkin, but it’s clear he wants to give this a tush-push over the goal line.”
Larkin made his trade request at the start of the offseason, but the Red Wings have received a package enticing enough to pull the trigger.
After serving as the Red Wings’ captain since 2020, Larkin was stripped of his ‘C’ at the start of the year because of the trade request. He began the year on the shelf with an injury, but quickly returned and has played just 10 games this season, scoring two goals and four assists for six points. However, he believes enough is enough now and hopes this tactic will speed up the process.
UPDATE: We have an official statement from the Detroit Red Wings
In our eyes, Larkin is well within his rights to want a trade and exercise his no-movement clause to go to a destination he wants to go to. This is where he’s going to live after all. That said, the Red Wings are well within their rights to wait until they get a package close to what they want for the player.
Our issue is that the player is now choosing to sit out. He signed a contract to play hockey for the Detroit Red Wings. If you want out, that’s fine, but not playing hockey at all is a clear breach of contract. So suspending the player without pay for this decision is completely valid, while the Red Wings can grant his trade request while keeping the team’s best interests in mind.

Oilers targeting an enforcer

According to Sportsnet’s Frank Seravalli, the Edmonton Oilers are eyeing New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe:
“Babcock has campaigned internally for more size and brawn in his forward group, which GM Stan Bowman is now examining on the trade market,” Seravalli wrote on Thursday. “One name that Babcock is believed to admire is New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe.”
Rempe, 24, is a 6’9″, 268-lb enforcer who doesn’t shy away from the physical side of the game. Since he joined the league in the 2023-24 season, Rempe has logged 154 penalty minutes, including 13 majors. Through 87 NHL games, Rempe has five goals and six assists for 11 points and is a surprising plus-seven, while averaging under eight minutes per night.
He has played in just two games this season, averaging under seven minutes per game. Rempe is still searching for his first point, but has one fighting major and a shot on goal in his limited ice time this season.
If added, Rempe would join Trent Frederic as the only Oilers forward to log a major penalty this season.
