I’m of the belief that even the most inconsequential of transactions, events and whatever you may have leaguewide affects every team, at every level, to some extent. Newton’s law and so on.
With that in mind, there just simply isn’t enough time or resources to give them all the attention they deserve in this space. Ideally, though, one can scratch the surface of these events – linked directly to the Vancouver Canucks or otherwise – and examine their far-reaching impact to Roger’s Arena and beyond.
With that, here are my Monday Morning Musings for the week that was.
Willie Desjardins gets a vote of confidence:
Not even going to lie… I paid almost no attention to hockey this weekend. Although, I did catch enough of Hockey Night in Canada to catch Elliotte Friedman and Damien Cox do their headlines segment. In Saturday’s episode, they revealed that Trevor Linden has given Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins a complete vote of confidence.
Rare are the decisions this front office makes that don’t invoke the gag reflex, but this is definitely one that I can get behind. I don’t think Desjardins is a great coach. Not by any means. Desjardins is likely closer to good than bad though, and of this much I am certain. Of course, Desjardins deployments leave a little to be desired, but that’s a trait he shares with 29 other coaches in the NHL. His systems are great from his blue line out and I remain skeptical of his impact on their defensive results, given the pieces at his disposal.
Amazing how quickly people forget Desjardins coached the Canucks to a score-adjusted Corsi of 50% last season. That’s quite the feat.
The Return of Tom Sestito:
File this under immaterial. Still, it’s interesting to see Tom Sestito – known in these parts as Top Sixtito – making his return to the NHL. Didn’t think there was another NHL game in him. Is it at all surprising that Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan was the one to give him that shot? Sullivan, you’ll remember, served under John Tortorella during their time with the Canucks. Tortorella loved him some Sestito. Why, I’ll never know.
Henrik Sedin leaves Saturday’s game with injury:
Still haven’t seen this game, but I’ve heard of the results and the injury suffered therein by Henrik Sedin. If it’s anything more severe than a broken nail, the Canucks would be wise to shut him down for the season. Henrik’s been playing hurt for a while now. Give the guy a rest so he can bring it next season.
Nikita Tryamkin coming overseas:
Colour me surprised that Nikita Tryamkin is not only coming to North America from the KHL but that he’s likely to suit up in an NHL game this season. That I did not expect.
Generally, using a draft pick on an overage player is almost always a losing bet. All the more so when you’re talking about somebody in their draft+2 year as Tryamkin was when the Canucks selected him in the third-round of the 2014 NHL draft.
I remain skeptical of Tryamkin’s ability, or that he can even reach the 200-game threshold for defining a successful pick. He’s proved me wrong before though.
We were on TV! Sort of:
