It’s November 1st. Pumpkins everywhere are being composted, items at Spirit Halloween are all 50% off, children are nursing candy hangovers while twenty-somethings are nursing very real hangovers, and October hockey is officially done and dusted.
Like every year, teams across the league have been celebrating Halloween all month, depending on their home and away game schedules. This year, the Vancouver Canucks were lucky enough to have a schedule conducive to celebrating Halloween in Vancouver on the day itself. While Devils night – literally and figuratively – did not go the team’s way, Halloween night was an opportunity to look absolutely ridiculous together in a much more positive way.
So, what exactly were the Canucks costumes this year?
In a word? Chaos.

Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson, Quinn Hughes

This year, Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson donned a classic group costume along with their partners Bella and Katelyn: the Scooby Doo gang. The only thing missing in their Mystery Machine crew would be the titular Scooby himself.
It looks like they found their perfect pooch in none other than Quinn Hughes. Between Huggy Bear, Scooby Doo, and putting up bionic levels of ice time, the last thing this team has Quinn Hughes doing is acting like a human man.

Thatcher Demko

Thatcher Demko, his wife Lexi, and their son went as Gru, Vector, and a minion from the Despicable Me film franchise. This also included dressing their dog Delilah up as a banana, the preferred snack of the terrifying minion characters that have haunted pop culture for over a decade. Maybe while he’s been on injured reserve, Demko has been concocting a plan to steal the moon?

Filip Hronek

Filip Hronek and partner Dominika showed some love for the DC universe with a Batman and Poison Ivy look. Let’s hope Vancouver was a little more manageable on Halloween night than Gotham City’s Halloween in 2022’s The Batman.

Kiefer Sherwood

Kiefer Sherwood and his fiance Ariel went as Neo and Trinity from The Matrix films. Since Neo is iconically portrayed by Canadian hockey legend and actor Keanu Reeves, I would like to think he would approve.

J.T. Miller

Finally, the piece de resistance. If you are familiar with JT Miller and his wife Natalie, they are committed to their Halloween costumes. Last year, they attended the team party as Hugh Hefner and a Playboy Bunny – Miller as the bunny, of course.
This year, the pair went as Austin Powers and a FemBot from the first Austin Powers film. I’m seeing a recurring theme here. J.T. Miller: husband, father, NHL veteran, power forward, and a man very comfortable in his masculinity.

The best part of this costume was perhaps Miller’s steadfast commitment to walking the midnight streets in heels. Beauty is pain, my friends.
He looks as comfortable in those as he does on skates. Frankly, he pulls off pumps better than I do; it almost makes me mad. I think Mike Myers would feel the same way about Natalie’s fantastic Austin Powers get-up.
That’s all of the costumes rounded up for this year! Let’s hope that with the end of the spooky season, the outcomes on the ice start looking a lot less scary as well.
