A difficult season for Nils Höglander took another tough turn on Wednesday when the Vancouver Canucks forward was ruled out for the upcoming World Hockey Championships due to injury. The Swedish hockey federation announced that Höglander’s spot on the roster will be taken by Detroit Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond.
Höglander suffered this latest undisclosed injury in a pre-competition game last weekend against the Swiss national team. The hope was he would be ready for the Worlds which begin May 15th in Zurich and Fribourg, Switzerland. But today’s announcement clearly indicates that will not be the case. And once again, Höglander finds himself having to rehabilitate from another injury.
It’s an unfortunate development because the 25-year-old was looking to salvage a lost season in Vancouver which started with ankle surgery in September and never really got on track. In 38 NHL games, Höglander scored just twice, added three assists, managed 35 shots on goal and 52 hits. He was also a healthy scratch on a number of occasions as he failed to gain the trust of head coach Adam Foote. That has been a consistent pattern for Höglander who has struggled to stay in the line-up under four NHL head coaches. If the Canucks make another coaching change this off-season, Höglander would be looking at playing for a fifth head coach in seven seasons in Vancouver since he joined the team in 2020. He is set to enter the second year of a three-year $9M contract. Without details about the nature or scope of this latest injury, it remains to be seen how it will impact Höglander’s ability to train fully over the summer months to be ready for training camp in September.
Canuck teammates Liam Öhgren and Linus Karlsson both remain in the running for spots on Sweden’s world championship team. The final roster will be announced after pre-tournament games this weekend.
