Elias Pettersson has arrived.
The 19-year-old Swedish prospect scored his first NHL goal on his first NHL shot in the season opener Wednesday evening against the Calgary Flames.
With the game deadlocked at zero in the opening period, Pettersson took a pass from the blueline and broke in on a 2-on-1 with pinching defenseman Derrick Pouliot.
Pettersson showed off his lethal shot with a wicked snipe over the shoulder of goaltender Mike Smith.
Here’s a look at the snipe in slo-mo:
Pettersson was one of the Canucks’ most consistent players during preseason, leading the team in scoring and dazzling with some slick moves. He wasted no time making his mark when it counted.
The crafty centerman is considered the frontrunner for the Calder Trophy and a huge piece in Vancouver’s rebuild. The youngster tore apart the Swedish League last year as a teenager, winning the MVP, playoff MVP and scoring title.
Welcome to the Elias Pettersson era.
