The Vancouver Canucks haven’t yet announced their playing roster for Saturday night’s matchup with the Calgary Flames, but head coach Rick Tocchet did speak to reporters in Calgary to offer some updates on his team.
According to Sportsnet’s Dan Murphy, Tocchet confirmed that Arturs Silovs would get the start in goal and would play the Canucks’ final preseason game against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday, October 4th. It’s expected that Nikita Tolopilo will get his first and perhaps only taste of preseason action during the third period of Saturday night’s tilt with the Flames, with Kevin Lankinen likely getting all of Monday’s game against the Oilers, and Silovs getting all of Friday’s contest.
Another update Tocchet gave Saturday afternoon was that JT Miller wouldn’t be in the lineup, saying Miller would play next Friday vs. Edmonton, and potentially against them on Monday. Miller is the only player on the Canucks’ roster who hasn’t played in a preseason game to this point.
Miller didn’t miss a day of training camp or the team’s scrimmage to close out camp in Penticton, and he’s also been a full participant in the Canucks’ practices since then. That would suggest that if Miller is dealing with something, it’s almost certainly minor and shouldn’t hinder his ability to be ready for opening night.
Nonetheless, Miller’s absences from the first four preseason games are unusual, and getting just one warmup game in for the season certainly wouldn’t be ideal. Miller’s conditioning shouldn’t be an issue, however, due to the fact he’s been practicing regularly since the start of training camp.
The Canucks fell to the Seattle Kraken on Friday to bring their preseason record to 2-1 after winning both of their home matchups earlier in the week against the Kraken and Flames, respectively.
After a busy first week of the preseason that featured four games in five nights, the Canucks’ schedule cools off before the start of the season, as they’ll play the Oilers on Monday, September 30th, then have three full days in between until their next game against those same Oilers on Friday, October 4th.
