Biega has shown that he can be a serviceable depth defenceman who works hard, plays with some grit, and can be fill in as a depth forward when injuries necessitate it. The contract value is very low and has a minor impact on the financial outlook of the team for the next two seasons.

Within the press release, GM Jim Benning had this to say:

“Alex has an incredible work ethic and is always prepared,” said Benning. “He sets an example for our younger players to follow. We’re pleased to have Alex as part of our team moving forward.”

It’s always good to have players like that around a team that will be injecting young players into their lineup over the next few years. It’s even worth suggesting that the organization looks at extending Darren Archibald for the same type of role. Both of them have worked extremely hard to get where they are and on most nights give it everything they got.

When they aren’t in the lineup, they are consummate professionals, waiting for another chance to give it all they got.

Having those types of players around and with very low cap hits is a viable thought process.

This season, Biega has been close to even in shot differentials, which is a good thing for someone like him.

It will be interesting to see how the Canucks manage their defence core over the summer. With the signings of Erik Gudbranson and Biega over the last couple of weeks, the group has become quite full for next season. You can argue the decision to keep the majority of this group, but that’s not what today is about.

Today is about Alex Biega signing a new contract and in a vacuum, the decision to keep the Bulldog around for another two years is a worthwhile venture.

Now we just see how the rest of the year and the off-season shakes out.
