The Vancouver Canucks have made a roster move today, recalling Jayson Megna from the Utica Comets. The move comes just days after the club sent Michael Chaput and Cole Cassels back down to the Comets on reassignment.
Megna, who first joined the Canucks ahead of last season on a one-year contract, played an unfortunately large role in the Canucks’ misfortune last season, playing big minutes over a 58 game span and contributing just eight points (four goals and assists alike) in that span. To suggest that Megna was something of a coach’s favourite last season is an understatement. The embattled then-head coach Willie Desjardins reiterated countless times what a believer he was in the journeyman forward.
One needn’t fear a similar role for Megna this season. With Brock Boeser day-to-day, it’s as simple as bringing in insurance in the event of a worst-case scenario where the Canucks best goal-scorer has to miss any games. And that’s just fine. Megna, thirteenth forward, is perfectly acceptable.
In four games with the Comets this season, Megna has one assist, four penalty minutes and is a minus-four.
