With all the nastiness in Saturday’s contest between the Canucks and Maple Leafs, it was no small miracle that everyone appeared to have left the game in one piece. That miracle appears too good to be true, though.
The Canucks placed Jannik Hansen on Injured Reserve and have called up Michael Chaput in his stead. Hansen joins a growing list of injured Canucks which already includes Anton Rodin, Alexander Edler and Chris Tanev.
Based on Ben Kuzma’s report this morning, Hansen’s suffering from a shoulder injury. Hansen sustained the injury on a questionable open-ice hit delivered by Morgan Rielly in the third period of Saturday’s game.
Just seconds after that play, Hansen charged Nazem Kadri for the late, dangerous hit he wrought on Daniel Sedin. With new light shed on the ailment he suffered going into that tilt, it makes Hansen’s defence of Daniel all the more endearing. Say what you will of the Canucks as a whole, but it’s perfectly clear Hansen hasn’t quit on this season.
Michael Chaput will be making his first appearance in a Canucks uniform as a result. The former third-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers has been taking the AHL by storm with the Utica Comets and has 13 points in 11 games to his credit.
