Ilya Mikheyev is being shut down for the remainder of the season, Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin announced following his club’s 5-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night.
Mikheyev will undergo surgery on his ACL, which he originally injured in the preseason and missed time with. Mikheyev worked with the Canucks’ medical staff to play through what he revealed was almost a full tear of his ACL.
Allvin added that Mikheyev is expected to be ready for training camp, and that certainly seems like the reason this decision is being made now rather than in the offseason.
On the bright side, this means that in his first season with the Canucks, Mikheyev scored 13 goals and tallied 15 assists through 46 games on an injured ACL. Fans noticed he didn’t look as fast as he normally did during his time in Toronto, but for Mikheyev to produce the way he did on a busted ACL bodes well for the final three years of his contract with the Canucks.
In the finale of his 2022-23 season, Mikheyev scored his 13th goal of the year. Mikheyev said post game that he will undergo surgery next week on his ACL.
Allvin also provided an update on goaltender Thatcher Demko, saying while it’s hard to give an exact timeline, he’s expected to be out for at least another three weeks.
Note: There will be no instant reaction article tonight. Cody Severtson is writing The Stanchies and those will be posted later this evening! Feel free to give your take on tonight’s game in the comments section below anyway!
