Canucks Army Postgame: A Case of the B-Lose

I don’t even know what to say anymore. How many different ways can I say “the Canucks were listless and didn’t score”? It’s as exasperating as it is exhausting on my level of creativity.
Another game though and another Canucks shutout. That’s the fourth of its kind in five games and a seventh straight loss, not that anyone’s keeping track. It wouldn’t be so painful if I could tell you it was percentage driven. Oh, how I’d love to be able to say this is a mirage. I just can’t, though. It would be damn irresponsible. A team has to get to the home-plate area before I reach that deep into my chest of excuses – as you might imagine, it’s overflowing at this stage of the season.
For the second time in less than a week, the Canucks held Brian Elliot’s hand all the way to an effortless shutout. They didn’t challenge the Blues. Not in any meaningful way. Don’t believe me? Let the shot totals take it away. The Blues more than doubled the Canucks, with 37 shots to their 15. The game, well, that was a foregone conclusion before puck-drop. The score itself, 4-0 for the St. Louis Blues.
I can handle losing. It’s a means to an end. We all knew it was coming. Hell, we all wanted it. I can’t handle efforts like these and the decisions that built the roster responsible for them. People say the rebuild hasn’t begun yet. How bad is this team when it does in earnest?

“Bro, where’s my score effects?”

Quick Hits

  • I’m not sure this is the lowest point in my Canucks fandom, but it’s not far off. The obvious choice is 2011. At least I had hope then. It wasn’t so crazy to think the Canucks could be right back in the finals as early as next season. This team? Hoo boy.
  • It doesn’t take a shot plot to realize the Canucks were toothless. I’m having a hard time recollecting anything that even resembles a scoring chance. In fact, I’m drawing a blank. Apparently, they had a few. Apparently.
  • There’s something almost poetic about Emerson Etem putting in his worst performance of the season a day after I praise all the little things he’s doing well. Certainly humbling, anyways. If you think Etem was ugly to watch, check this out… among all skaters tonight, Etem had the worst Corsi For at 8%.
  • You can tell the timing hasn’t come back to Jannik Hansen’s game. That takes, well, time. Especially when coming off an injury. Thought he still played a solid game tonight, all things considered. Would’ve loved seeing him convert on one of the half-breakaways he had, but that would involve scoring.
