The time is nigh upon us, to decide which among the league’s worst will pick first, second or third overall. You’ve played the Draft Lottery Simulator. Hell, even the Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning has played the Draft Lottery Simulator.
Whether the Canucks secure the first overall pick, or wind up picking second or third overall, there is a franchise player on the horizon. Can’t remember the last time a draft lottery was this hyped, but I guess the stakes are all the higher with three dice roles to jockey position.

REASONS TO WATCH THE LOTTERY
- First and foremost, the chance to draft Auston Matthews is very special. He’s a can’t miss star and after a season in the Swiss league, he’s more than ready to play in the NHL. Matthews will enter any lineup and be a future franchise player. It would be great to see the Canucks land this stud; we could use a rallying point.
- Maybe you’ve heard of Patrik Laine? If the Canucks DO finish second overall they can snag this dynamo winger. There have been rumblings that he could go first overall but whoever lands the top pick would be crazy to not take Matthews. Laine is an explosive winger that has all the moves and tools to make it in the NHL. At 6’4″ and 209 lbs, he’s a monster! He’ll challenge with his booming shot and can protect the puck in a Sedin-like way, one would argue. Laine at two isn’t a loss folks.
- Remember 1970? Me neither. But the Sabres edged out the Canucks for the first pick in that year’s draft. They picked Gilbert Perreault and the Canucks took Dale Tallon. Will history repeat itself? If Mark Messier is in the house then I totally believe there will be another cursed moment in Canucks history.
- With Jesse Puljujarvi you get a confusing name to pronounce and an even more confusing name to pronounce when he scores a tonne of goals. He’ll be the dark horse of the top three but really if you get a bonafide star goal scorer, why are we debating this at all? Puljujarvi has the speed that Laine does not and his silky smooth mitts make him just as dangerous.
- Let’s be honest, you are watching this no matter what. The intrigue and the background leading up to this makes it must-see TV. As a Canucks fan, you want to see your team get better tonight. The draft isn’t for another 2 months but the hype surrounding that pick will sell tickets, merch and belief in a quicker rebuild.
- If new hockey fan @soloucity is watching, he’ll have something interesting to say and if the Canucks land that big pick, maybe Roberto Luongo will weigh in.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
MY TAKE
The Canucks are due for something really amazing to happen. They’ve never been in this position before so there is some excitement building. I can’t wait to be excited again but I do need to keep my emotions at bay because, well… Canucks. Canucks get the pick. THE FIRST PICK.
