Canucks Army GDT #54 – Canucks vs. Bruins

By Rhys Jessop
Feb 13, 2015, 15:33 ESTUpdated:
After a brief 2-game road swing, the Canucks are back in action tonight to take on the Boston Bruins. With Milan Lucic, Brad Marchand, and Zdeno Chara still in the opposing lineup, and Derek Dorsett, Ryan Miller and Willie Desjardins joining the Canucks, the fires of hate still burn deeply, but not all of it stems from 2011 anymore. Regardless, if Wednesday’s game against Chicago is any indication how Vancouver will play tonight, it should be a fun game.

Head to Head

Storylines
- Stoking the Fire – I am told that something significant happened between the Canucks and Bruins sometime in the summer of 2011, and I vaguely remember Vancouver being the NHL’s best team back around that time, but I seem to have completely forgotten the events that unfolded between June 1st and June 15th of that year. I am told that the two teams are 5-5 against each other since June 1st, 2011, and I know that this is the first time the Canucks will play the Bruins this season, meaning that with a win tonight, the Canucks can claim dominance over the Bruins once and for all! …No? Okay. Here is photographic evidence of Zdeno Chara destroying downtown Vancouver with laser vision then.
- Memorial Cup Rematch – Certain members of both the Vancouver Canucks and the Boston Bruins have an antagonistic history that predates the 2011 Stanley Cup finals as well. Willie Desjardins and Derek Dorsett (and a 15-year old Linden Vey!) were members of the hated Medicine Hat Tigers squad that Milan Lucic, Craig Cunningham, and the rest of the Vancouver Giants lost to in the 2007 WHL final in double overtime of game 7, before they got their revenge by beating the same Tigers in the 2007 Memorial Cup. Dorsett was particularly reviled at the time, receiving an ejection in game 4 for biting Giants winger Kenndal McArdle’s fingers after baiting the much smaller forward into fighting Tigers heavyweight Jordan Bendfeld off the opening faceoff of game two. Giants coach Don Hay would later accuse Desjardins of orchestrating the whole thing – an accusation that many Giants supporters feel to be true.
- Back on Top – After a shaky start to the season, Tuukka Rask has picked up his play and returned to being as dominant a goaltender there is in the NHL. He has not allowed more than three goals in a game since December 4th, and has pulled his save percentage up to 0.923 on the season, good for 9th among qualified starters. In his last 20 games, Rask is 11-3-5 with a 0.934 save percentage. By comparison, Ryan Miller is 9-10-1 with a 0.916 save percentage, but has struggled of late, going 2-3-0 with an 0.882 save percentage in his last 5 games. Tonight will be the 600th game of Miller’s NHL career.
