Canucks a finalist in “Kerfoot Sweepstakes”

Last week, it was reported that the Vancouver Canucks were meeting with NCAA free agent Alex Kerfoot. Now, the Canucks are being listed as finalists in Kerfoot’s decision, which will reportedly be made sometime this week.
This contradicts an earlier report from Grady Sas of Daily Hive, which suggested that Kerfoot, a native of Vancouver and product of the BCHL, would not be signing with his hometown club.
The New York Rangers, who appear to have been the frontrunner in this decision all along, are one of the other finalists for Kerfoot, according to the NY Post’s Larry Brooks. Brooks said that openings on New York’s roster plus a friendship with former Harvard teammate make the Rangers an attractive option for the 23-year-old.
In the same vein, Sas’s report back in July suggested that Kerfoot wouldn’t want to sign in Vancouver because of the depth of similar, small, skilled forwards in the same position getting in the way of him cracking the roster.
Regardless, as we’ve said before, adding Kerfoot would be nice because he’s a prospect and he costs nothing more than money. But, if he does ultimately opt to sign elsewhere, it isn’t the end of the world.
