The World Junior Championships are just around the corner as many teams have already announced their rosters for the tournament.
Canucks fans should take note that Sweden is going to be announcing their roster early Wednesday and we will be keeping our eyes out to see if Elias Pettersson played well enough to earn a spot on the roster while also wondering if Jonathan Lekkerimäki has recovered from his concussion and will be on the team.
Those questions will be answered on Wednesday when the WJC roster for Sweden is announced. We are also keeping Finland&#8217;s roster on the back of our minds as goaltender Aku Koskenvuo has an outside shot of being the backup or third-string goalie.
On top of the WJC roster announcements, we had some goals from a few Canucks prospects but also saw some interesting evolving stories in the goalie realm of the Canucks&#8217; prospect pool.
Let&#8217;s get into everything that happened in the world of Canucks prospects over the last week.
<h1>Goalies get the glory</h1>
We didn&#8217;t have a ton of highlights in the world of Canucks prospects but there are some interesting things to talk about when it comes to the crease patrollers.
Let&#8217;s kick things off with Arturs Silovs, who will be playing a lot of AHL games over the next six weeks as his partner Collin Delia was called up to the NHL with the injury to Thatcher Demko.
For the first time in Silovs&#8217; career, he played back-to-back nights and while doing so, picked up back-to-back wins against the Laval Rocket. Silovs stopped 59 of 67 shots over the two games on the weekend after picking up a win on Tuesday over the Bakersfield Condors, where he stopped 16 of 19 shots.
It&#8217;s going to be a long run of Silovs being the starter in the AHL for the time being. The 21-year-old will be the workhorse with Delia up in the NHL and it&#8217;s a good test for the young goaltender, who has shown well this season.
Aku Koskenvuo had another start for Harvard over the weekend. He allowed five goals on 33 shots and had some open cavities in a 6-4 loss to Colgate University.
It&#8217;s good to see Koskenvuo get more starts in the NCAA, as he is currently trending as the third goaltender on Harvard&#8217;s depth chart. It&#8217;s going to take some strong performances at this level for him to earn more starts and his Saturday game against the toothpaste team didn&#8217;t help.
I hope that guy in the comments who wanted more Matthew Thiessen is reading this. The 22-year-old goalie from University of Minnesota-Duluth is continuing to have a good comeback season. He posted a 24-save shutout on Saturday and stopped 28 of 30 shots in a 2-0 loss, both games against Colorado College.
Thiessen currently sits sixth in the NCAA for save percentage with a strong 0.925 SV%. Saturday&#8217;s 4-0 win was Thiessen&#8217;s first shutout of the season.
<h1>Sweden always gets its own heading</h1>
Though we don&#8217;t have any highlights to get to from the two Swedish defencemen we are about to talk about, we do have a lot of minutes to mention.
Filip Johansson had a pair of SHL games where he played a ton of minutes over the past week. On Tuesday, Johansson played 19:01 but followed that up by playing a season-high 24:23 on Thursday and then topping that with another season-high 26:04 on Saturday.
Another defenceman who had a good week in the SHL was Elias Pettersson (D-Petey), we did some number crunching on his possession time, so let&#8217;s get into it.
Pettersson played three SHL games over the week and he had double-digit minutes in each of the three games. He played 13:54 on Tuesday, 15:03 on Thursday, and 14:29 on Saturday.
After averaging 14:29 of ice time through the week, he holds strong possession numbers with a 57.8% Corsi and 64.4% control of expected goals.
Pettersson is continuing to trend in the right direction and we are hoping to see him play in the World Junior Championships.
