Blackfish: Canucks Army Prospect Report: January 7th, 2016
alt
Jan 7, 2016, 11:00 ESTUpdated:
Happy New Year!
The World Juniors are now over with host Finland capturing their second gold medal in the last three years. The NHL trading deadline is suddenly on everyones mind with some trades yesterday and hopefully they continue. But for the Canucks specifically, their prospects continue to make noise around the hockey world. The Comets are in the thick of the playoff race in the AHL with the CHL playoffs wide open as well.
So let’s wake up from that holiday slumber and take a look at the past week for Canucks prospects.

  • Brock Boeser won a bronze medal after the US routed Sweden at the World Juniors. Overall Boeser had an okay tournament in a depth role for the US. I would expect him to return next year and have a bigger offensive role.
  • We all know what happened with Jake Virtanen, and I am not going to pile on. Overall Canada had a bad showing and Virtanen was a part of that. Here’s hoping he can regain some confidence and have a good second half, whether that be here or for the Calgary Hitmen. Virtanen took a penalty on the play below, but I don’t care, I loved it

  • Dmitry Zhukenov pushed his point streak to 10 games with 1 assist on New Years Eve. Unfortunately, he did not put up any points in Chicoutimi’s game on Sunday, thus ending the point streak. He had 2 SOG and finished -1.
  • Tate Olson played two games this week against the Vancouver Giants; he finished at +/- 0 and 0 SOG. He played last night where he was held pointless and took 2 PIM.
  • Obviously Kyle Pettit reads Blackfish every week, as I mentioned that he had an increased role with Dylan Strome at the World Juniors and he wasn’t doing much. Pettit had a good week putting up 2 goals and 1 assist in 3 games.
  • Guillaume Brisebois left the Acadie Bathurst Titan game on December 29th and hasn’t returned. Although I have been unable to find any confirmation, it’s safe to assume he is injured with something.
  • Mackenze had his first full week back in the CHL; he finished the week with 4 PIM. He was playing defence on Tuesday against Victoria, but that may change with Brandon Carlo returning from the World Juniors. I don’t know if the Canucks will like if he keeps playing defence, as they seem bent on making him a forward as a pro.

  • Brock Boeser was in Finland winning a bronze medal, so he didn’t play any games for University of North Dakota. This goal by Boeser’s linemate, Drake Caggiula this week was fantastic.
  • Adam Gaudette played one game this week and scored a goal!
  • Mike Williamson did not play any games this week.

  • Jordan Subban is now first in defenceman scoring for Utica and is 4th on the team behind Canucks prospect Hunter Shinkaruk, Alexandre Grenier and Brendan Gaunce.
  • Brendan Gaunce continues to play centre.
  • The Comets are finally getting some players back with Ashton Sautner, Ronalds Kenins and Alexandre Grenier being assigned to the AHL throughout this past week.
  • Darren Archibald has signed a standard player contract with Utica, and should remain there for the rest of this season.
  • Joe Cannata, Linden Vey & Alex Biega are all up with the Canucks.
  • Go check out Jeremy Davis’s in-depth look at the week that was for the Comets.

  • Dane Fox had another good week putting up 1 goal and 2 assists; he also had 7 PIM, was +3 and had 8 SOG
  • Ludwig Blomstrand had a huge game on New Years Eve putting up 2 goals and 2 assists. He finished the week with 9 shots on goal and +1
  • Anton Cederholm finished with 1 assist; he is still looking for his first professional goal.
  • Curtis Valk returned to the Kalamazoo lineup this week to play his first games of the season. He had 1 goal and 2 assists during the New Years eve game and then was held pointless in the other game for Kalamazoo. Once he gets his legs back under him, I won’t be surprised to see up in Utica.
  • Even McEneny did not play a game this week as he remains on IR.

  • Joe Cannata remains with Vancouver, thus Clay Witt is up with Utica. But again, Witt did not see any action in the AHL this week.
Well there you have it, another week over in the Canucks prospect world. Until then, Matthew Henderson and Shia Labeouf have some very important words for the Canucks and their prospects:
