Earlier this morning, it was announced by the Canucks that forward Anton Rodin would be out for an undetermined time to rest his knee:
This extremely unfortunate news for the Swedish winger who has appeared in three games for the Canucks this season. No timeline has been outlined for when Rodin may return.
Rodin had a very positive season in the SHL last season, before suffering the aforementioned skate cut injury. He had been so dominant that despite missing the final third of the season in Sweden, he was still voted the MVP for the season.
The Canucks had brought him over with hopes of providing some secondary offence, and it appeared that he was poised to do that after a fantastic pre-season. Unfortunately, his knee didn’t feel quite right and he was forced to sit out until late December. Rodin appeared in three games for the Utica Comets before coming back to the Canucks and aggravating the injury in the aforementioned January 6th game.
For Rodin personally, this is awful news. He worked extremely hard to get a chance in the NHL and it’s evaporating before his eyes because of a freak injury suffered in practice almost a year ago.
Hopefully with some rest and rehab, Rodin will be able to play some games before the end of this season. But at this point, since Rodin is a pending Group VI UFA, his chances of getting another contract with the Canucks seem to be quite small.
