Thatcher Demko is back.
The Canucks have reassigned forward Zack MacEwen and goaltender Marek Mazanec to the AHL Utica Comets, according to head coach Travis Green.
The designation comes with Alex Edler (concussion) and Demko (slight sprain) taking part in morning practice. Demko is expected to backup Jacob Markstrom against the Ducks on Monday evening, while Edler remains out of the lineup.
Demko impressed in his lone NHL start this season, stopping 36 of 39 shots in a win over the Sabres. The 23-year-old could get the nod Wednesday against the Avalanche or Thursday against the Coyotes.
MacEwen certainly made an impact during his recall, collecting an assist, dropping the gloves and playing a hard-nosed game in four contests. He’s been a significant impact player for the Comets this season, notching 17 goals and 42 points in 49 games.
It’s important to note there are typically lots of paper transactions today. A player must be on an AHL roster by 3 ET today in order to be eligible to be sent down from the NHL any time thereafter for the rest of the season. MacEwen could very well be called back up tomorrow, but now he’s eligible for AHL playoffs.
Edler has been out of the lineup since Feb.4 after he suffered facial injuries in a game against the Flyers. The veteran rearguard has been the subject of trade speculation this season but has a full no-trade clause and has stated his desire to remain in Vancouver.
