You Know What I Hate?! – March 5th

Kent Wilson is Angry. (It’s not really Kent Wilson, but kind of looks like him somewhat).
Today I continue my weekly feature of me venting and raging on stupid crap happening with the Canucks, their fans and around the NHL. Two things about feature… 1) It will appear (hopefully) every Monday (this week, Tuesday!), and 2) It is blatantly ripped off from a stand-up bit from comedian Craig Anton. On either point, I make no apologies. Enjoy. Or don’t.
This week, I’m mad about gross make-outs, Cherry’s nativism and Chris Tanev in the press box. Seriously, WTF?
You know what I hate?! Idiots on the kiss-cam. More often than not, I think the moments caught on the kiss-cam are kinda cute. Put an old couple up there giving each a sweet little peck and that’s just all kinds of cool. What I HATE is when some Ed Hardy-wearing, roided out ass and his skanky, overly-processed "lady" start giving each other tonsil swabs with their tongues. Keep your disgusting displays of affection to spotting each other in the weight room, or the family change room at the public pool where you two think it’s awesome to change together and screw.
All gross. All nasty. All inappropriate.
You know what I hate?! Chris Tanev in the press box, while Aaron Rome is still in the line-up. This blog hides no part of its love for Chris Tanev. We’re also realists. We know that Tanev had a couple of shaky games, in particular the one which resulted in AV giving the kid a seat in the press box. But Aaron Rome has been astoundingly poor in his last few games and was especially putrid against the Sabres. So if Chris Tanev is going to sit out again, while Rome remains in the line-up then Coach V and I are gonna have words. And by that I mean that I will cower behind a keyboard and write inflammatory comments while he never reads this blog ever.
You know what I hate?! Don Cherry telling Brian Burke that the Leafs need more Ontario-born players. Such crap. No, Mr. Cherry, Brian Burke needs to assemble a team that has the best chance of winning, not the best chance of knowing where the nearest Country Style or Beer Store is.
The Leafs problem is NOT that they don’t have enough native Ontarians on the roster. The problem is their defence and goaltending have been terrible all season. While it’s been joked about for many years, and he’s made no secret of his love for Canadian players (and nobody else), Cherry’s message is tired, old, and xenophobic. Don… you’re so utterly clueless about what makes a good team good in today’s NHL. Keep your head up, you old racist jerk. /thumbs up.
You know what I hate?! Intolerance, Exclusion and Discrimination. Man, does that burn me. Two stories with conflicting ideals surfaced over the weekend. The first was Kirk Cameron on Piers Morgan that he does not accept or condone gay marriage because the Bible explicitly says that marriage should be between a man and a woman. Gah! Kirk, you fool. You closed-minded, brainwashed fool. To me, saying that gays and lesbians can’t marry is no different than saying African-Americans can’t marry. Or short people. Or gingers. They are different than you, and not by choice, and as such they should be short-changed with their rights and freedoms. You tit.
Then there’s "You Can Play", an organization founded by Patrick Burke (son of Brian, brother of Brendan) which espouses a message of acceptance and tolerance of LGBT’s in sport. I couldn’t be more happy that the NHL is in full support of this initiative and this project. There needs to be a change in the culture of athletes in their acceptance of gay teammates, and this project is a MASSIVE step forward in helping that become a reality. While Kirk Cameron is busy spewing his message of intolerance and exclusion and discrimination, Patrick Burke and the "You Can Play" project are opening hearts and eyes and minds. As I said yesterday, if you’re not on-board with You Can Play, then you had better unfollow me right now, because you and I believe in very different things. This goes way beyond just hockey, folks. You Can Play is going to change lives.
