When you’re a fan of a team as poor as the Canucks are, the most exciting time of the year is the one that’s almost upon us: draft season. For the second year in a row, the Canucks will be picking 5th overall, and are poised to get a very good player that should be an integral part of their future.
So, with that, I present to you the biggest question of the 2017 calendar year. Who should the Canucks pick at 5th overall?
Last week I asked: Who’s on your protected list? Who would you like to see Vegas take from the Canucks?

Besides the Sedins and Eriksson who has to be protected I think you protect Tanev, Edler, Gudbranson, Markstrom, Granlund, Baertschi and Sutter. I think both Gudbranson and Sutter are overvalued by the Canucks (though not as much as felt on CA) but by the same token I think they have more value around the league and it would thus be poor use of resources not to protect them. I would hope that LV would pick up Sbisa but given the better D out there it would likely be one of Gaunce or Boucher. Given how crappy the Canucks exposures are compared to some other teams, it makes way more sense for LV to go for a prospect from us.

We don’t really have any painfully bad contracts to rid ourselves of, other than Eriksson’s (which is probably going to look better this year, anyways). I’m a bit worried about losing one of our forward prospects; but as most projections have Vegas taking Sbisa from us, that’s probably going to work out fine for us. I’ll still be a hair nervous until I see that Gaunce and Boucher are still with us June 22.

I don’t really think it matters too much who the Canucks protect or expose, all the ‘irreplaceables’ are exempt anyway and The Sedins have to be protected. I was all for Sbisa going to Vegas until Tryamkin jumped ship. Now, especially if Taney gets traded, the back end seems a little light on experience. However, given what some other teams are likely to have to expose, I could see Vegas taking Gaunce or Boucher or even Rodin just to fulfil the requirements for the players they have to select as much as anything.

None of the players we could lose matter. Sbisa. Guance. Boucher. Whatever. Take any one of them.
The expansion draft just doesn’t matter from a canucks perspective. Vegas ain’t licking their chops at the player they get from us.
