Why Canucks Army and The Fan Zoo are giving away a Chris Higgins autographed jersey

So why, you ask, are we giving away a Chris Higgins jersey? Of all the forwards on the Canucks, what makes him so special? Well, if you pay attention to the underlying numbers, Chris Higgins is among the best Canucks skaters at driving play and controlling puck possession. He’s the ultimate glue guy!

Consider his impact on Ryan Kesler this season. When Kesler skates without Chris Higgins, he controls 53.8% of Corsi events – which, is about what you’d expect from one of the league’s best two-way forwards. When Kesler skates with Chris Higgins, however, they control 58% of Corsi events, which isn’t just a good number, it’s complete dominance. 

Kesler isn’t the only centreman who Higgins has had this impact on, either. Take Samme Pahlsson, he’s controlled 46.5% of Corsi events without Higgins, and with Higgins that number jumps to 51.6%. With Cody Hodgson, the number jumed from 48.9% to 55%. Higgins’ underlying numbers indicate that he does the little things: winning puck battles and making smart passes, that contribute to the Canucks controlling the puck (and winning games). His impact doesn’t necessarily show up in the boxscore, but if you look at who is helping the Canucks control play: he’s right at the top of the list. 

We’re faithful to our hockey math at Canucks Army, and by the numbers Chris Higgins is among the team’s most valuable skaters. To recognize his impact on the team, we’ve chosen him as a mascot of sorts, and in partnership with The Fan Zoo we’re giving away a Chris Higgins signed sweater to celebrate the launch of our new Facebook page!
