On yesterday’s episode of Canucks Conversation, David Quadrelli and Harman Dayal tackled the Vancouver Canucks’ 2023-24 team awards. Each year, the Canucks recognize players in four categories:
  • Cyclone Taylor Trophy (Most Valuable Player)
  • Walter (Babe) Pratt Trophy (Best Defenceman)
  • PavelBure Award (Most Exciting Player)
  • Fred J. Hume Award (Unsung Hero)
Quinn Hughes: A Lock for Best Defenceman
The defenceman debate was brief. “Quinn Hughes is going to win best defenceman every single year, just like he’s going to keep breaking his own points record every season he’s a Canuck,” said Quads. “He’s going to lead this franchise in scoring by the time he’s like twenty-six.”
“It’s pretty amazing, and that award is going to need to be renamed after Quinn before he even retires,” Harm joked.
The Case for the Unsung Hero
The Unsung Hero award sparked more discussion. Harm championed Pius Suter: “He’s not going to win, but that’s kind of the point. I lean toward Pius Suter. If he’d stayed healthy for all eighty-two games, he’s on pace for seventeen goals and thirty-five points. He’s played wing, center, everywhere in the lineup. Defensively, his metrics have been elite, and he only makes 1.6 million dollars.”
Quads had a different take: “Nils Hoglander or Casey DeSmith is my pick. Garland is going to win the fan voting award, but he’s too sung.”
Harm added, “If we were talking defencemen, it’s too bad Soucy didn’t stay healthy for more games; otherwise, he’d be in the conversation too.”
MVP, Most Exciting, and Historical Notes
The guys recalled last year’s winners (Elias Pettersson – MVP, Andrei Kuzmenko – Most Exciting, Hughes – Best Defenceman, Dakota Joshua – Unsung Hero). They noted that Joshua could become the 5th Canuck to win the Unsung Hero award back-to-back, and this might be the first season without a team award for Pettersson.
MVP was another unanimous decision for Quinn Hughes.
The Most Exciting Player debate centered on Hughes vs. Miller. Harm leaned toward Hughes but acknowledged Miller’s case: “I think it’s Quinn, but I won’t argue against anybody who says J.T. Miller. You can make a case for both, but Quinn’s going to sweep the other awards, so I understand why fans might want to give someone else some love.”
