The stars aligned for Roberto Luongo as he won the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers on the 24th anniversary of being traded to the Panthers for the first time. And on Wednesday, Luongo posted a video of him eating pasta out of the Cup, celebrating the victory in a uniquely memorable way.
Luongo won the Cup on Monday as part of the Florida Panthers’ front office, a long-awaited achievement for the franchise’s greatest goaltender. Luongo has worked in the role since his retirement in 2019, serving as a special adviser to general manager Bill Zito.
He has been very active on social media with the Cup following the win.
Roberto Luongo narrowly missed capturing the trophy with the Vancouver Canucks in 2011. Thirteen years later, he again found himself at Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. However, this time, he watched from the press box as the Florida Panthers, the team he helped assemble, battled the Edmonton Oilers.
The Panthers defeated the Oilers 2-1 in Game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final on Monday, clinching the franchise’s first championship. This historic win was a big sigh of relief for the team and their fans as the Game 7 win came after three straight losses by the Panthers, which allowed the Oilers to force this 7th game.
To celebrate, the club will hold its Stanley Cup parade in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, June 30.
Reflecting on his journey and the support he has received from fans of his previous team, the Vancouver Canucks, Luongo expressed his gratitude: “I just want to thank especially the people of Vancouver for their support. I’ve received a lot of messages over the last two months from people rooting for me, so I’m truly grateful for them. I always enjoy going back there and I look forward to going back there next season.”
