Former Vancouver Canuck and current Arizona Coyotes forward @Loui Eriksson set up fellow ex-Canuck @Antoine Roussel for the game-winning goal in Arizona’s 1–0 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday.
The Canucks traded both Eriksson and Roussel to Arizona in July as part of the deal that brought @Oliver Ekman-Larsson and @Conor Garland to Vancouver. Both players had once been prized unrestricted free agency acquisitions for Canucks general manager Jim Benning but experienced significant declines in their twilight seasons with the Canucks.
After taking a feed from @Ilya Lyubushkin at the Jets’ blue line, Eriksson streaked in down the right side before sending a backhand saucer pass toward the top of @Connor Hellebuyck’s crease. Roussel managed to slip past former Canucks teammate and current Winnipeg defenceman @Nate Schmidt and deflected Eriksson’s setup past Hellebuyck to give Arizona a one-goal lead.
Eriksson and Lyubushkin picked up the helpers on Roussel’s third goal of the season, which came at the 17:59 mark of the second period in Monday’s game. Here’s the video of the play:
Arizona managed to hold onto the 1–0 lead over Winnipeg through the end of regulation time despite being outshot 46–15. Coyotes goaltender @Karel Vejmelka stopped all 46 shots he faced for his first shutout in the National Hockey League.
Eriksson is still searching for his first official goal as a Coyote after scoring three times in the preseason. The 36-year-old Swede has three assists in 20 regular-season games with Arizona this season; Roussel has three goals and zero helpers in 18 contests.
