Vancouver Canucks Sign Jayson Megna

The Vancouver Canucks took another dip into free agency, signing unrestricted free agent forward Jayson Megna. Megna, 26, can play all three forward positions, but is a natural centre.
Megna’s new contract is a one-way deal, valued at $600,000. In spite of the one-way qualifier, I imagine the plan for Megna is to play with the Utica Comets in the AHL. Megna spent last season as a member of the New York Rangers organization, splitting time between the big club and their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack.
In six games with the Rangers last season, Megna contributed one goal and one assist while breaking even with a 50% Corsi For. Megna, 26, has been on the peripheries of the NHL for three seasons now. In 56 career games, split between the Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins, Megna has six goals and six assists to his credit and is a career 46% Corsi For.
For the Canucks, who didn’t tender Linden Vey a qualifying offer, this addresses a need for organizational depth down the middle of their lineup. Before signing Michael Chaput earlier and Megna now, the Canucks were looking a little thin at centre. The obvious hope is that the Canucks won’t have to delve too deep into their talent pool, but in the event they have to, they’ve set themselves up in a much better position than last season.
