The playoff history is still alive and well in this week’s glance back at hockey history. Here’s what happened the week of May 18-24:

May 24, 1994: Despite trailing 3-0 going into the second period, the Canucks come back to beat the Leafs 4-3 in double OT to advance to the Cup Final for the second time in franchise history.

May 24, 2011: Exactly 17 years later, Kevin Bieksa nets one against San Jose in double OT to once again advance to the Finals.

May 22, 1970: The Canucks are granted an NHL franchise, along with Buffalo, increasing the NHL from 12 to 14 teams. The expansion fee in 1970 was $6 million, compared to Las Vegas’s $500 million fee last year.

May 20, 1986: The Flames and Canadiens combine for four goals in a 1:34 span, setting a record for the fastest four goals scored by two teams in a Stanley Cup Finals game.

May 19, 2004: The Flames beat the San Jose Sharks 3-1 in Game 6 to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 15 years.

May 20, 1979: Before moving to the NHL upon the WHA’s folding, the Winnipeg Jets are the final team to win the Avco Cup when they beat the Oilers 7-3.

May 18, 1970: The Leafs acquired Jacques Plante from St. Louis for cash on this day. The Hall of Fame goaltender would post a 2.46 GAA in three seasons with the Leafs.

May 24, 1988: At 16:37 of the second period of Game 4 between the Bruins and Oilers at the Boston Garden, a power outage caused the game to end early. The scoring totals were still counted and it was announced that the game would be re-played in Boston at the end of the series, if necessary. Personally, I think the NHL missed out on a prime chance to introduce glow-in-the-dark hockey.

May 24, 1990: Ah, the end of the dynasty… The Oilers hoisted the Holy Grail for the fifth time in seven seasons on this day when they defeated the Bruins 4-1 in Game 5.

May 19, 1984: The Oilers win their first ever Stanley Cup Championship when they defeat the Islanders 5-2. They would go onto win the Cup four times in five years.

May 19, 2000: Glen Sather steps down as Oilers GM and would be replaced by Kevin Lowe.

May 22, 2009: Nicklas Lidstrom sets an NHL record when he plays in his 228th consecutive playoff game. He would finish his career with 263 playoff games.

May 22, 2002: Dominik Hasek picks up an assist on an OT goal and becomes the first goaltender to ever do so in a playoff overtime game.

May 20, 2002: Chris Chelios appears in his 200th playoff game, becoming the first American-born player to do so.

May 19, 1996: Paul Coffey scores twice in a 3-2 loss to the Avs, becoming the highest-scoring defenceman in playoff history with 57 goals.
