On yesterday’s episode of Canucks Conversation, David Quadrelli and Harman Dayal were joined by the managing editor for OilersNation, Bagged Milk, to discuss the implications of Saturday’s tilt between Vancouver and Edmonton.
The Canucks and Oilers are gearing up for a monumental clash on Saturday – a game with major implications in the Pacific Division. The Canucks currently cling to a narrow four-point lead, but the Oilers hold two games in hand, which could swing the race in their favour.
“The one point really mattered; getting to overtime was massive,” Quads emphasized about Wednesday night’s OT loss to the Arizona Coyotes. “The Oilers are four points back of the Canucks for the top of the division with two games in hand, one of which will be played tomorrow against the Coyotes and then Saturday against the Canucks. Thatcher Demko did practice today, so we’ll see what comes of that. Saturday is going to have a lot of interesting storylines heading into it, but none greater than the battle for the top of the Pacific.”
The Canucks-Oilers rivalry carries extra intrigue this season due to Vancouver’s early dominance. They swept all three previous matchups – a fact not lost on analysts.
“We’re going to see a really good game,” noted Bagged Milk. “Earlier in the season, the Canucks walked through the Oilers in all three games they played. It’s going to be interesting to see how game four goes, because that was not the Oilers team that’s playing today. The Canucks wiped the floor with them because they were better in every zone; from the crease outward, they were the better team and deserved to win. Is that going to happen on Saturday? It very well may, but I think we’re going to get a much tighter game than we got the first three times. Whether or not Connor (McDavid) is playing, the Oilers are playing better. The Canucks could have Demko back; that would obviously be a huge boost for them between the pipes. So, I think we’re in for a good game between two really good teams; it’s going to be fast, there’s going to be goals, and a lot of cool plays from two rosters with a lot of skill.”
“What we’re all hoping for is a round-two matchup with the Edmonton Oilers. That would be so fun and entertaining,” Quads added.
“That would just be a fun series,” agreed Bagged Milk. “Those two teams have a lot of skill, a lot of guys that can score goals and make plays. That would be a great series provided they both go through. There’s a lot to like here, and to be honest, I’m hoping all the Canadian teams can go on a run. It’s more fun when they’re in; we tend to care more up here. I’m looking forward to the first round in general; there’s no better time for the NHL than the first round of the playoffs.”
Saturday night’s game isn’t just about bragging rights – it carries significant playoff seeding implications. Buckle up, fans, because this clash has all the elements of a Pacific Division thriller.
