The Vancouver Canucks are finalizing a trade with the Winnipeg Jets that will send defenceman Nate Schmidt to Winnipeg in exchange for a 2022 third-round pick, according to multiple reports.
It was earlier reported that the two teams had been grinding away on a potential deal involving the 30-year-old defenceman, but that Schmidt had Winnipeg on his 10 team no-trade list.
Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic is reporting that Schmidt will waive his no-trade clause to facilitate the deal.
The Canucks traded a 2022 third-round pick to Vegas last offseason in return for Schmidt, but his first year in Vancouver was less than ideal.
The team dealt with a COVID-19 outbreak on top of struggling to string together wins all season long.
According to Satiar Shah of Sportsnet 650, the Canucks will not be retaining any salary as part of the deal.
Both player and team didn’t think Vancouver was a great fit and had reportedly been looking for a trade since the season came to a close.
