Report: Sedins to Join the Tre Kronor at the Worlds (Update: Edler too)

On the immediate heels of Vancouver’s first round playoff ouster, it appears that the Sedin twins will be joining the Tre Kronor at the World Championships. At least that’s what Daniel told Swedish media outlet Expressen today.

According to the Expressen report, there’s only a few additional formalities to traverse and then the Sedins will join the Swedish national team at the Worlds. The twins have participated in two World Championships in the past but haven’t done so in well over a decade (they won bronze with the Tre Kronor in 1999 and in 2001).

It makes sense that this year would be the right one for them to go participate in the tournament with Team Sweden. For one, the lockout and the first round series sweep means that the twins don’t have as many miles on their odometer this May as they’ve had in the past. Secondly, it’s the last World Championship before the Olympic tournament in Sochi next winter, so it makes sense to get to work on sucking up to the national team (not that the twins wouldn’t make the team anyway). Thirdly the tournament is taking place in Sweden where the twins spend their summers anyway.

Finally I’d imagine that winning gold at the World Championships would be a solid way to remove the awful taste left over from a first round series sweep in which, if we’re being honest, the twins were outplayed by San Jose’s top-players. The twins just concluded, in my estimation, the best even-strength season of their careers and should hold their heads high regardless of what occurred against the Sharks in the playoffs. Still, I could see how a gold medal might help cushion the blow.

According to Gunnar Nordstrom, the Sedin twins are expected to join Dallas Stars sniper Loui Eriksson on first line that, yeah, should be pretty much nails. The Expressen report also suggests that the twins could join the Tre Kronor in time to face Team Canada on Thursaday. 

According to Linus Hugosson of hockeysveridge.se the twins will be joined by their usual backend caddy Alex Edler:

You may recall that Alex Edler was left off of the 2010 team (somewhat preposterously, in my view). So he has more incentive to get in good with the national team than the twins do. He’ll also face stiffer competition in making the 2014 team considering Sweden’s enviable blue-line depth which includes the likes of: Ekman-Larsson, Hedman, Kronwall, Enstrom, Brodin, Gunnarsson, Karlsson.
